Since first appearing on TLC in 2008, the Duggar family has expanded far beyond Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children. As more of the siblings have married and started families of their own, viewers have grown increasingly curious about the in-laws connected to the well-known reality TV family.
One of the newer branches of the Duggar extended family is the Nakatsu family, following Jed Duggar’s marriage to Katey Nakatsu. Jed’s relationship has introduced fans to a different background and family dynamic than some of the earlier in-law connections.

1. Jed Duggar Married Into the Nakatsu Family in 2021
Jedidiah “Jed” Duggar tied the knot with Katelyn “Katey” Nakatsu on April 3, 2021. The two exchanged vows at the Barn at the Springs in Springdale, Arkansas. The couple started courting in 2020, with Jed popping the question on Valentine’s Day in 2021
The couple had numerous members of the Duggar family in their wedding party. Jed’s twin brother, Jeremiah Duggar, served as his best man. Jed also had five of his other brothers, including Jason Duggar, James Duggar, Justin Duggar, Joseph Duggar, and Josiah Duggar, as well as his brother-in-law, Austin Forsyth, serve as groomsmen.
Katey also had three of Jed’s sisters: Jinger Duggar Vuolo, Johannah Duggar, and Jordyn-Grace Duggar serve as her bridesmaids.
2. Jed Duggar’s Father-In-Law Is Kory Nakatsu
When Jed Duggar married Katey, he gained Kory Nakatsu as his father-in-law. Born on May 31, 1966, Kory married his first wife, Kim Flanigan, in 1997. The couple had two daughters together, Katey and Lauren, before divorcing in 2005.
In 2009, Kory married his current wife, Kerry Sheppard Nakatsu. Kerry is Katey Duggar’s stepmother and Jed Duggar’s stepmother-in-law.
Kory has spent the majority of his career working in business, serving as a global account manager for major corporations in Phoenix, Arizona, until 2020. Kory also earned his private pilot’s license in 2016.
3. Jed Duggar’s Mother-In-Law Is Kim Flanigan
Katey Duggar’s mother is Kim Flanigan. She was born on June 26, 1968. She was married prior to tying the knot with Katey’s dad, Kory.
Kim and her first husband had two children, Jamie and Reed, before divorcing in the mid-1990s. Kim then had two more children, Katey and Lauren, with her second husband, Kory Nakatsu.
Jed Duggar’s mother-in-law married for a third time in 2019. She married Anthony Griskowitz in Arizona. However, the couple divorced in 2021.
4. Katey Duggar Comes From a Blended Family
Katey Duggar is one of the only Duggar in-laws who comes from a blended family background. In addition to her full sister, Lauren Nakatsu, Katey has an older half-sister, Jamie Roberts Brock, and an older half-brother, Reed Roberts, through her mother, Kim. She also had three stepsiblings for a brief time during her mother’s marriage to Anthony Griskowitz.
Following her parents’ divorce, custody arrangements gave Kory Nakatsu decision-making authority over education, while Kim retained healthcare rights. During their parents’ marriage, Katey and Lauren attended public school alongside their older half-siblings, but that changed after the split.
In 2012, Kory began homeschooling both Katey and Lauren. Around that time, he also introduced teachings from Bill Gothard’s Institute in Basic Life Principles into their daily lives.
5. The Nakatsu Family Already Shares Multiple Grandkids With the Duggar Family
The Nakatsu family is already closely connected to the Duggar family through a growing number of grandchildren. Kim Flanigan is a grandmother of seven, while Kory Nakatsu is a grandfather of four.
Kim’s oldest daughter, Jamie, and her husband, Logan Brock, share three children: Payton, Liam, and Carson.
Meanwhile, Katey and her husband, Jed Duggar, have four children together. Their oldest son, Truett Oliver Duggar, was born on May 2, 2022. They welcomed their second child and first daughter, Nora Kate Duggar, on May 24, 2023.
On January 8, 2025, the couple expanded their family again with the arrival of twin girls, Elsie Kate and Emma Kate. Since Jed is a twin himself, the birth marked a particularly meaningful milestone for the family.
Although the Nakatsu family may be newer to Duggar fans, their background, blended family dynamic, and growing number of grandchildren have made them an increasingly talked-about branch of the extended family.
