Who Knew Catherine O’Hara Played Sally in ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas?’

Beloved actress Catherine O’Hara, whose remarkable career spanned decades, brought to life one of animation’s most beloved characters — Sally in Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

O’Hara, who died at age 71 on Jan. 30, 2026, passed away leaving behind a legacy that includes iconic live-action roles and unforgettable voice work in classic films.

‘Home Alone’ Isn’t The Only Holiday Classic O’Hara Was In

Released in 1993, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” has become a holiday staple and a defining animated classic.

In the stop-motion musical fantasy, O’Hara voiced Sally — a rag doll-like creation of Dr. Finkelstein who is caring, curious and deeply intuitive.

Sally’s character isn’t just Jack Skellington’s love interest; she embodies emotional depth, resilience and hope — qualities O’Hara infused into her performance.

O’Hara also gave voice to Shock, one of the mischievous trick-or-treaters working for Oogie Boogie, showcasing her versatility as a voice actor.

Her vocal range allowed her to shape two very distinct personalities in the same film, making both characters memorable to audiences young and old.

One of the film’s standout moments is “Sally’s Song,” a poignant musical piece expressing Sally’s inner longing and emotional conflict.

O’Hara recorded both the dialogue and singing voice for Sally — a rare feat that blends acting with music.

She Previously Dished on Voicing the Role of Sally

She later told interviewers that recording the song was “beautiful but intimidating” due to its emotional and technical demands, according to an interview with Live For Films in December 2018.

“Recording Sally’s song was intimidating -that song is beautiful and difficult to sing- but it’s been even more thrilling to sing the song live on stage with an orchestra, while the audience watches the film,” she added.

And O’Hara even performed it at one point with a live orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl during the movie’s anniversary celebration.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” was directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton, who originally adapted the story from his own poem.

The film stars Danny Elfman (singing voice for Jack Skellington) and Chris Sarandon (speaking voice for Jack), and its richly detailed stop-motion world of Halloween Town has captivated fans since its debut.

O’Hara’s Sally remains a central figure who grounds the story’s emotional heart.

O’Hara’s Voice Roles

Many forget that in addition to her wide range of films, she also lent her voice to a great deal of animated films.

Beyond her work as Sally, O’Hara’s voice acting credits included roles in “Frankenweenie” (2012), “Over the Hedge” (2006), “Monster House” (2006), “The Addams Family” (2019), “Elemental” (2023) and “The Wild Robot” (2024), demonstrating her breadth in animation.

For many fans, learning that O’Hara was the voice of Sally has been a delightful surprise — a reminder that her impact went far beyond her memorable live-action performances and that her voice helped define some of the most beloved animated worlds of the last several decades.
