The Family Dolly Parton Left Behind

Dolly Parton filled concert halls, built businesses and became one of country music’s most recognizable voices. Yet she always traced her story back to a crowded Tennessee cabin and the family that first taught her to sing.

Following Parton’s death at 80, attention has turned to the siblings, nieces, nephews and goddaughter who remained central to her life. Her husband of nearly 59 years, Carl Dean, died in March 2025.

How Did Dolly Parton’s Family Announce Her Death?

People reported on Tuesday, August 25, that Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an Instagram video on behalf of the Parton and Owens families. “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus,” Seaver said.

Reuters separately reported that Parton died Tuesday, citing a family statement. A cause of death was not immediately announced.

The 11-time Grammy winner had discussed health problems during the previous year and canceled a Las Vegas residency in May 2026. Four days before her death, however, she told People that she still had projects she hoped to complete.

Did Dolly Parton and Carl Dean Have Children?

Parton and Dean married in May 1966 after meeting outside a Nashville laundromat two years earlier. They did not have children, but Parton never believed that left her without a maternal role.

Several of her younger siblings lived with the couple, and she developed close relationships with their children and grandchildren.

“I’ve loved [my siblings’] kids just like they’re my grandkids, and now I’ve got great-grand-kids!” she told People in 2014.

Her nieces and nephews called her “Aunt Granny,” a nickname later given to a restaurant at Dollywood.

Which Family Members Does Dolly Parton Leave Behind?

Parton was one of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Owens. She is survived by six siblings: Willadeene Parton, Robert Lee Parton Jr., Stella Parton, Cassie Parton, Freida Parton and Rachel Parton George.

Several entered entertainment. Stella became a country singer and author, while Rachel starred in the television adaptation of 9 to 5 and later wrote the cookbook Good Lookin’ Cookin’ with Dolly. Five siblings died before Parton: Larry, Floyd, Randy, David and Coy “Denver” Parton. Coy died on July 23, 2026, at 82.

Parton also leaves a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Miley Cyrus was Parton’s goddaughter and, as research published in 2024 revealed, her seventh cousin once removed.

Their relationship extended beyond a ceremonial title. Parton played Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana, recorded with Cyrus and offered guidance throughout her career.

“Dolly’s been like a mother to me,” Cyrus told W magazine in 2024.
