Dolly Parton’s late husband, Carl Dean, quietly finalized his estate plans years before his passing — and now, the details have officially been made public. Court documents obtained by Us Weekly reveal the provisions Dean made for Parton and their family, as well as how he planned to distribute his assets if she had passed first.
Dean died on March 3 at the age of 82. According to the filing, the will — signed on January 16, 2013 — was never amended. The country music icon, 79, has since been appointed executor of his estate.
Carl Dean’s Will Details Estate Distribution
Dean’s will names the Carl Thomas Dean Trust as the sole beneficiary of his estate, with Parton serving as trustee. The documents, obtained by US Weekly, state that the couple had no children and that Dean did not own real property in Tennessee, but he did possess personal property and cash. He also had no controlling interest in any active business or enterprise.
The will lays out specific instructions for the division of personal effects. Dean wrote that he intended to leave a handwritten note specifying who would receive which household and personal items. If that note could not be found, Parton would take responsibility for distributing the property.
Dean designated that Parton would receive “all of his right, title, and interest in any personal effects relating to her music and entertainment career, including, without limitation, pictures, costumes, jewelry, musical instruments and equipment.” If she had passed before him, those items would have been distributed through the trust.
Parton will also inherit his interests in furniture, art, automobiles, and other assets. If she had predeceased him, those items would have been divided equally among Dean’s five nieces and nephews and Parton’s 14 nieces and nephews.
If Parton could not serve as executor, Dean nominated his niece to take her place.
Dolly Parton Reassures Fans Amid Health Concerns
The will’s release comes as Parton continues to address public speculation about her health. Last week, the singer postponed her Las Vegas residency, and her sister called on fans to pray for her.
“I know lately everybody thinks that I am sicker than I am,” Parton said in a video shared to Instagram on Wednesday, captioned, “I ain’t dead yet!” Filming between commercial shoots, she told fans, “Do I look sick to you? I’m working hard here!”
She explained that following Dean’s death, she “didn’t take care of myself” and “let a lot of things go.” Doctors recently told her it was time to address “some problems,” prompting her to cancel certain commitments to stay closer to home.
“Nothing major,” she assured. “But I did have to cancel some things so I could be closer to home.”
Parton concluded the video with a message to put fans at ease: “I wanted you to know that I’m not dying! I don’t think God is through with me, and I ain’t done working.”
