Legendary country singer Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, leaving behind an incredible legacy. And with that, the singer also accumulated a vast fortune throughout her career, with Forbes reporting that she had an estimated net worth of $450 million in 2026.
Parton had no children with her late husband, Carl Dean, and despite no details surrounding Parton’s having been publicly released, it’s expected that her close bond with her family, which includes 19 nieces and nephews, could play a factor into how the money is distributed.
In an interview with Billboard, she spoke about the importance of having a will.
“I would not want to leave that mess to somebody else,” she said. “A word to all the other artists out there: If you haven’t made those provisions, do that. You don’t want to leave that mess to your family for people to have to fight over. You need to take care of that yourself, even if it’s a pain in the [expletive] – and it is.”
The Singer Used Her Platform and Wealth To Give Back
However, while her family might receive some of her fortune, it is also thought that she might have donated a large part of it to charity, as she was known for giving back.
Parton began her Dollywood Foundation in the 1980s, aiming to help children in Sevier County, Tenn, which is where she grew up.
“I’m kind of addicted to the feeling of giving,” the country star told PEOPLE in 2021. “Knowing that I’m doing something good for someone else.”
She also started the Imagination Library, which is a program that sends one book per month to children in Sevier County from birth until their first year of school. At Dollywood, the singer opened a 30,000-square-foot aviary to house rehabilitated bald eagles that could not be released into the wild. These are just some examples of her incredible philanthropic efforts.
“I’m proud of the Imagination Library as much as anything I’ve ever done in my life,” Parton told PEOPLE in 2022. “I always want to do things that I can be proud to talk about, things that I believe in.”
Why Did Dolly Parton Create The Imagination Library
Parton’s reason for creating the Imagination Library was inspired by her father and his inability to read.
“Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done,” she said in a note on her website. “I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Daddy. He was the smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams.
“Inspiring kids to love to read became my mission. In the beginning, my hope was simply to inspire the children in my home county but here we are today with a worldwide program that gives a book a month to well over 3 million children.”
