She’s a truly legendary country singer, a hugely successful businesswoman, an incredibly generous philanthropist, a movie star, a wine maker, an author, a songwriter, an icon, a rock star… it seems there’s nothing Dolly Parton can’t do!
But when it comes to the question “What Would Dolly Do?”- that’s another matter entirely.
It’s been printed on t-shirts and bumper stickers, but now we finally know the answer to exactly what Dolly WOULD do, and also what she wouldn’t!
“E News” recently played a lightning round of “What Would Dolly Do?” with none other than Dolly herself, and her answers might surprise you.
Question One: Dolly Would or Would Not Go to Space?
Unlike singer Katy Perry, a trip to space aboard a rocket ship is a hard NO for Dolly.
“Go to what?” she asked at first. But once she realized the interviewer was saying “space,” she didn’t have to think about her answer.
“No, Dolly wouldn’t! Dolly wouldn’t! I don’t even like to fly,” she said laughing.
And the same goes for self-driving cars. When asked if she’d ever be a passenger in a self-driving car, she exclaimed, “NO! Dolly wouldn’t!”
Question Two: Dolly Would or Would Not Be an ‘American Idol’ Judge?
While Dolly Parton is happy to mentor new talent- and has- she doesn’t want to be the one deciding who gets a chance to compete on either “American Idol” or “The Voice.”
Dolly told “E News” that she’s been asked many times to be a judge on both shows, but her answer will always be no. “I’ve been asked to do that a lot of times,” Dolly said. “It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it, because I know how sincere everybody is. Even if they’re not that good, they believe they are. And I just can’t hurt people.”
But the legendary singer has been a guest mentor on both “American Idol” and “The Voice.”
Dolly appeared on season seven of “American Idol,” when the top nine contestants- including winner David Cook– performed her songs.
She appeared on “The Voice” twice- in season nine in 2015 and again in season 11 in 2016.
Question Three: Dolly Would or Would Not Throw Herself a Party?
When it comes to throwing herself an 80th birthday party, Dolly would and Dolly WILL!
The singer will turn 80 on January 19, 2026.
When the interviewer asked her, “Dolly would or Dolly wouldn’t throw a massive party for her 80th birthday?” “Oh, I would!” Dolly exclaimed. “Of course!” she went on, “I’d probably do it on television. I’d probably do some big special. I might surprise you, make some announcement.”
“You think I’m gonna let a thing like that go by without making a big to-do about of it?” Dolly went on. “I mean, how many people turn 80-years-old still doing all the things I’m doing? So I’m excited about it. I mean, I don’t like being 80, but since I am and I’m still doing great, I’m going to make the most of it.”
Question Four: Dolly Would or Wouldn’t Go Out In Public With No Hair & Makeup
Probably any Dolly fan can tell you that the answer to “Dolly would or Dolly wouldn’t go out without hair and makeup” is a resounding “would NOT.” She does have her own makeup line after all.
When asked the question, Dolly’s reply was definitive.
“No way! Dolly wouldn’t! wouldn’t! wouldn’t! wouldn’t!” the singer laughed.
“Only if somebody in my family was dying and I had to get somebody to help us out. And I’d go fast.”
In fact, according to geo.tv, Dolly goes to bed each night with her makeup on!
And her reason is simple. In an emergency, she wants to be ready to face her fans.
Dolly says it’s especially important to her to have makeup on when she turns in for the night while she’s in California. “I sleep in my make-up when I’m in California. With the earthquakes, I never know when I’m going to have to run out in the middle of the street,” she explains.
“I’m not going to be on the news and look like hell, which I do without make-up. So I leave a little bit on,” she continued.
Question Five: Dolly Would or Would Not Wear Sweatpants?
While one of Dolly Parton’s most recent Instagram posts says “Everyone has their own ideas of how they look best, and in my world, I always wanted to be glamorous.✨” – the legendary singer still says yes to sweatpants.
When asked, “Dolly would or Dolly wouldn’t wear sweatpants?” – Dolly replies, “Oh, Dolly would, Dolly would. I wear sweatpants… with high heels!”
