This is not the first time McGraw has shown his appreciation for veterans, and in 2012, he made headlines for the good work he was doing to help service members in need with housing. As part of his  “Brothers of the Sun” tour with Kenny Chesney, the pair gave away 25 mortgage-free houses, NBC News reports.

McGraw comes from a military family, and he also shared more about his relatives and what they mean to him. “My sister’s a veteran, my uncle’s a veteran, my grandfather was a veteran, one of my best friends is a veteran,” he said, NBC News reports. “I’ve known people my whole life who are in service to America. And I think in my position to be able to do something like that is probably the ultimate thing. So to be able to go on tour and provide sort of a stable foundation for a veteran and their family is something I really look forward to.”

McGraw’s openness and support for veterans help to raise awareness for the challenging situations many face.
