New Show Begins
We are somewhere in the Caribbean. The chefs have arrived. They meet Ted Allen, who has the judges with him: Gabr Bertaccini, Maneet Chauhan, and Marcus Samuelsson. The “Chopped” basket will be there, but they’ll have to earn it to use it.
The chefs are divided into two teams. They will compete and live as a team. They will have two challenges each week. The winning team from the first challenge will gain immunity. The lowest chefs on the losing team will then head to The Gauntlet to compete for their survival.
First Challenge
For this first challenge, the chefs will have four ingredients in the basket and have to make three cohesive dishes and use all of the ingredients in each dish. Before they can cook, they have to construct their kitchen! Yup, no kitchen is provided on “Chopped Castaways.”
The ingredients for this challenge are goat leg, Hawaiian musubi, scorpions, and papaya. They have 2 1/2 hours to construct their kitchen, start their fires, and create their three dishes.
The Green Team is working on their kitchen. They said Dwight is going to be key in building their kitchen, as he uses a meat tenderizer for a hammer! For the Blue Team, Aidan is trying to work on getting their dishes planned. They are doing some shopping in the pantry. The Green Team is struggling to get their fires started. Both teams now have their fires started and burning well.
Cooking Time
The teams have their fires started, so the cooking is happening now. For the Blue Team, Jean-Paul (JP) has decided to make a dessert for one of their dishes. Over on the Green Team, we have under an hour left, and they are still trying to figure out the dishes they are making.
We are definitely taking a deeper dive into each chef. Getting more details on them. Since the ingredients are limited in the pantry, Ted says there is a treasure chest hidden on the island, which has more ingredients for them to use. They get clues and have to figure out where the treasure chest is, as they will have tools and ingredients to use. It’s a race between Green and Blue.
Stephen got the treasure chest for the Blue Team, which has a meat grinder, gochujang, pita bread, and Greek yogurt. They are very excited to have these additional items. Dwight has been tending to the fire for the Green Team, but he hasn’t been doing any cooking.
The time runs out, plating is done, and time for tasting next on “Chopped Castaways.”
Tasting & Results on ‘Chopped Castaways’
Time for the judges to taste the dishes they came up with:
- Green Team – For Hannah and Paulette’s dish, Gabe said the flavors they developed were quite impressive. It really worked. Maneet said the goat was 85% done, but she liked how the basket was utilized. Marcus said it’s a very well-done dish. For Ara and James’ dish, Marcus said it’s a well-put-together dish. Gabe said he loved the smokiness of the dish. Maneet said the Greek yogurt would have changed this. For James, Cate, and Dwight’s dish, Marcus said they did a lot of good work here. The judges are not overall impressed with this dish.
- Blue Team – For Aidan and Stephen, Marcus said the cooking here is really good. A really developed texture. Maneet said the best-cooked dish so far, but she wanted some freshness added to the dish. For Sunny and Logan, Gabe said a very inventive dish. Maneet said the goat needed to be seared at a higher temperature. Marcus said it’s just tough. For JP and Carrie, Gabe said very creative. Maneet said they really highlighted papaya, but they know what they are doing. Marcus said not enough time to go back and forth. Be decisive when you cook.
Results – The winning team tonight is the Green Team, so they have immunity tonight. That means the Blue Team is on the chopping block, and the two chefs heading to The Gauntlet are Logan and Sunny.
The Gauntlet
For this challenge, they have spider crabs, avocado, artichoke hearts, and sancocho in the basket. They will have 30 minutes to cook this dish, with one of them being eliminated.
The chefs are working on their dishes. The other chefs are cheering them on, but Logan says it’s drowning himself out and can’t think properly.
