Fans will know well that Andie MacDowell‘s character on “The Way Home,” Del Landry, gets to enjoy an onscreen romance. In real life, the actress has also found love. In fact, the Hallmark star “has been married twice and came close to walking down the aisle a third time,” according to Parade. That’s not to mention a relationship with a fellow famous performer. Beyond that, Andie has opened up about her life as a single woman.
Andie Was First Married to Former Model Paul Qualley
In 1986, Andie married former model Paul Qualley, a year after the two met while shooting a Gap ad. Following their wedding, the husband and wife moved to a ranch in Montana with the actress travelling back to Hollywood when needed on the set of a movie.
Together, they welcomed three children, a son, Justin, and daughters, actress/singer Rainey and actress Margaret.
By the late ’90s, Andie wanted to leave Montana, telling The Age in 2002, “I decided I didn’t want to grow older in the middle of nowhere among people who weren’t my family.”
They ended up moving to North Carolina where they could be neighbors with Andie’s sister. However things weren’t exactly idyllic within the home, and the next year, the couple decided to get a divorce.
Andie then Dated Co-Star Dennis Quaid
After Andie had split from Paul, her daughter, Margaret had hopes that her mom and dad would get back together. That was one of the reasons she loved “The Parent Trap,” which stars Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson as exes who reconcile. Because of this, Margaret would encourage her mom to watch the movie with the hopes that it would prompt her to give her own marriage another try.
“I would tell my mom how much I loved The Parent Trap and be like, ‘We should watch it. It’s a really smart movie. They make a lot of good decisions in that movie,’” Margaret told Harper’s Bazaar in September 2023.
Soon enough, Andie was starring in a movie with Dennis, “Dinner With Friends,” in which the two played a couple. Margaret recalled, “She comes home and she’s like, ‘Margaret, I know how much you love The Parent Trap …’ And I was like, ‘Yeah?’ and waiting with bated breath, hoping my parents were getting back together. And then in walks Dennis Quaid — her new boyfriend.”
Andie and Dennis were together for a year before moving on.
Andie’s 2nd Marriage was with Former Schoolmate Rhett Hartzog
GettyIn July 1999, the same year Andie officially divorced her first husband, she reconnected with businessman Rhett Hartzog, who attended the same South Carolina high school as the star. It didn’t take too long for the pair to get engaged, which they did at the end of the same year they got back in touch.
Rhett told People, “I had a secret crush on her in high school. … She’s as pretty on the inside as she is on the outside.””
People explains that the pair “married in November 2001 in a lavish 450-guest ceremony in Asheville, N.C., surrounded by her three children … Hartzog’s marriage to MacDowell was his first.”
However, after around three years of marriage, Andie and Rhett divorced in October 2004.
Andie Was Engaged to Used-Car Dealer Kevin Geagan
In January 2006, Digital Spy reported that Andie was “set to be married a third time,” noting that she was “engaged to Kevin Geagan, a used-car dealer that lives near her Asheville, North Carolina, home.”
Kevin told the Asheville Citizen Times (via Digital Spy), “I can tell you that we are engaged. Obviously, I’m very happy.”
At the time, Digital Spy added that Andie was “still to date married to Rhett DeCamp Hartzog, but the pair ha[d] filed for divorce.”
Alas, the new romance didn’t last and the engagement ended before the two tied the knot.
Andie Is Now Single — ‘I Want to Go to Bed By Myself’
Getty“I’m so single,” Andie said while opening up about her relationship status on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2024. She went on to say, “I do think that there is nothing wrong with being single, really. I have great female friends and I have some male friends that I like too.”
“I feel like a lot of times, we get this pressure we have to be with someone. That we’re incomplete if we choose to be single,” she said on The Talk in 2019. “…I’ve been married and I know what it’s like. It’s great and everything, but I don’t know that I really want to do it [again]. I want great friends … I want to go to bed by myself … My life feels very full.”
