Maggie Smith’s Sons Inherited Her Nearly £16 Million Fortune
GettyWith a star of her caliber, Maggie Smith’s net worth shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. But the “Downton Abbey” actress’s reported £15,977,325 net worth is eye-catching regardless. The amount totals roughly $21.7 million in US currency. Her liquid assets are not the only thing her sons have inherited.
Maggie Smith’s will also includes a five-bedroom West Sussex farmhouse. The property, called Douglas Lake Farm, is also to be equally distributed between her sons. Smith inherited her late husband Beverly Cross’s assets upon his passing in 1998. Cross, a playwright, left copyrights, royalties, and unpublished works in Smith’s name.
The legendary actress had two children with her first husband, Sir Robert Stephens. The pair were married from 1967 to 1975 before getting divorced. Their sons, Chris Larkin, 59, and Toby Stephens, 57, also have two and three children, respectively, making Smith a grandmother of five. Larkin and Stephens will be sharing Cross’s assets with his children from a previous relationship.
Inside Maggie Smith’s Family Life

Chris Larkin used a different name to distance himself from his famous parents and establish a career on his own terms. He is best known for appearing in “Outlander.” Larkin has been married to Victoria “Suki” Steadman since 2005.
Toby Stephens has had a prominent onscreen career. The actor has starred as a “James Bond” villain, appeared in Bollywood movies, and played lead roles in “Black Sails” and “Lost in Space.” Stephens currently stars in the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” TV series. He has been married to Anna-Louise Plowman since 2001.
In a 2012 interview with The Daily Mail, Stephens praised Maggie Smith for being a fantastic grandmother. The actor revealed Smith had been strict during his upbringing but was the opposite with his children. After Cross’s passing, Smith spent much of her time with her sons’ families.
“She loves, really loves, being around them,” Stephens told the outlet. “She was stern with me, but around them she is a real softie. That’s the privilege of being a grandparent — they can indulge the children while parents have to be the bad guy. Grandparents can also be subversive and naughty with them. And she certainly is.”
