HBO has officially cast one of the major characters in the second season of its upcoming “Harry Potter” adaptation. Nicholas Hoult, who recently portrayed Lex Luthor in the James Gunn-directed film “Superman,” will star in the second season of the television series as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart.
Swapping the city of Metropolis for the castle walls of Hogwarts, the 36-year-old will take on the role of the flamboyant teacher from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” In the 2002 film adaptation, the part was originally played by Kenneth Branagh.
His casting comes months before audiences will even see the first season of HBO’s ambitious “Harry Potter” reboot.
Nicholas Hoult Will Play Gilderoy Lockhart
News of the casting announcement was first reported by Deadline, with HBO later confirming that Hoult had been cast in the second season of the show.
The character Lockhart is first introduced in the second “Harry Potter” novel, replacing Quirinus Quirrell as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. A bestselling author and major celebrity in the wizarding world, Lockhart is a supposed hero who has survived numerous dangerous encounters with various magical creatures.
However, it is later revealed that he is a fraud who has stolen the accomplishments of other wizards and witches before erasing their memories to protect his reputation. Nevertheless, he plays an important role in the trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron discovering the Chamber of Secrets and ultimately foiling Lord Voldemort’s plans.
The character was memorably portrayed by Branagh in the original movies and was more bumbling than evil, but with Hoult’s experience playing villainous characters, Lockhart could prove more of a foe for the protagonists.
Although Lockhart’s most important storyline occurs in “Chamber of Secrets,” he is shown sporadically in later novels, so Hoult could make additional appearances in later seasons.
‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Continues To Move Forward
Casting news for the second season of HBO’s series may be surprising to some considering that the first season has yet to air. In fact, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is not due to premiere until Christmas 2026, yet the second season was officially greenlit in May of this year.
This only demonstrates the confidence HBO has in its enormously expensive new adaptation.
Each season of the series will adapt one of the seven novels in the series, giving each story significantly more screen time when compared to the movies.
Production for the second season is expected to begin later this year, presumably in an effort to keep gaps between seasons to a minimum and prevent the child actors from growing too much.
The show is set to air on HBO and will be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
Hoult Joins An Extensive Cast Of Famous Faces
Hoult is set to join an increasingly large cast, made up of familiar and new faces.
HBO has already revealed the trio of young actors who will portray the main three protagonists. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy,
Meanwhile, Nick Frost has been cast in the role of Hagrid. The fan-favorite character was previously portrayed by Robbie Coltrane, who sadly passed away in 2022.
However, there has yet to be any confirmation about who will portray Lord Voldemort, the main antagonist in the franchise. Ralph Fiennes has previously suggested that Cillian Murphy is in line to succeed him as Voldemort.
Fiennes played the Dark Lord throughout the original film franchise, beginning with “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”
