David Bowie Passed Away on This Day in 2016: Remembering His Beautiful Life & Legacy

David Bowie passed away on January 10, 2016. He died from liver cancer and was 69 at the time of his death. It has been ten years, and the world is still mourning the loss of an icon. This is a look back at his cause of death and the loved ones he leaves behind. 


A Celebration of David Bowie’s Life 

Bowie died from liver cancer days after turning 69. A documentary released posthumously and titled “David Bowie: The Last Five Years” gave a glimpse into his life and how he learned that his illness was terminal just three months before his death, The Guardian reports

The musician’s death was announced on Facebook. “January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,” the statement reads. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

At the time, fans expressed their heartbreak over the loss of the beloved musician. “I grew up with David Bowie, and it’s so sad to know that he passed away; he was so amazing and had so much talent to offer,” a comment reads.

“David Bowie, you are the most special .. The odd, the brilliant, the poet, the vocalist, the artist, the bleeding heart, the fashion King, the most unique, and a sunset of 1,000 colors …” another fan shared. “Thank you for your music, it saved me many times RIP.” That pain is still felt by so many ten years later.


​​Remembering David Bowie 

Bowie’s loving wife, Iman, continues to honor his memory, and her social media posts highlight their incredible relationship and undying love. The couple met in 1990 on a blind date and married two years later, on June 6, 1992, at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Florence, Italy. They had one child, a daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Zahra Jones.

On January 7, Iman and Lexi posted heartfelt tributes on Instagram celebrating Bowie’s heavenly birthday. On January 10, Iman posted a video on Instagram showing herself getting a tattoo in honor of her late husband. “Jan 10th. The pain didn’t vanish.. it left in its place a loving permanent mark,” she wrote in the caption. She also included the hashtag, BowieForever. 

Fans flooded the comment section with supportive messages. “Look, Iman, at all the love still out in the world for your husband,” a comment reads. “He left a beautiful legacy that brings comfort to so many during these difficult times. I think he’d be surprised at the depth and breadth of it – and maybe quietly proud. I love your tat.”
