Jessica Simpson Sets the Record Straight on Why She Flew First Class While Her Kids Sat in Coach

Jessica Simpson is setting the record straight after her ex-husband, Nick Lachey, accidentally sparked a massive internet debate by revealing she flew first class to Hawaii while her three young children sat back in economy.

Speaking to paparazzi at LAX, the fashion mogul explained that the seating arrangement wasn’t a strict parenting lesson, but rather a generous family gift from her own mother, Tina Simpson, who purchased the plane tickets.

An Awkward Reunion at 35,000 Feet

The seating situation came to light during a recent episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” where Nick Lachey shocked host Andy Cohen by revealing he randomly ended up on the exact same 6.5-hour flight to Kauai. Lachey, who was traveling with his wife Vanessa, noted that the cross-cabin encounter marked the first time the famously divorced couple had been in the same room “in the same vicinity” in two decades.

Airline insiders confirmed to TMZ that the tension was so thick that Simpson ultimately swapped seats with another first-class passenger just to stay out of her ex-husband’s direct line of sight.

While early rumors suggested Simpson sat apart from her kids to teach them a lesson about entitlement, she quickly shut down the gossip upon landing back in Los Angeles. Cornered by paparazzi at LAX, the fashion mogul clarified that she didn’t book the travel herself.

“My mom bought those tickets,” Simpson explained, noting it was a special family gift from her mother, Tina Simpson. When pressed on whether she would normally split up the family cabin, she added, “Of course [I’d sit with them if I paid].”

Furthermore, Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie weren’t entirely left to fend for themselves in coach. The three children were accompanied by Simpson’s husband, former NFL player Eric Johnson, while Jessica took her grandmother up to first class to enjoy the upgraded amenities.

Simpson and Lachey were the quintessential pop culture pairing of the early 2000s. They wed in 2002 and starred in MTV’s mega-hit reality show “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” which catapulted them to a level of intense public scrutiny that ultimately contributed to their painful, worldwide divorce in 2006. For twenty years, the two maintained complete distance—making the 6.5-hour flight to Kauai their first face-to-face encounter since the split.

While Lachey has since built a stable life with his wife of 15 years, Vanessa, Simpson’s own marital dynamic has been in flux. In January 2025, Simpson announced her separation from former NFL player Eric Johnson after a decade of marriage, calling it a “painful situation”.

Despite the breakup, the exes remain dedicated to a harmonious co-parenting dynamic, which explains why Johnson was in economy looking after their three children while Simpson traveled up front.

As for her current relationship status, the 45-year-old fashion mogul has officially entered her “Jessica Simpson 4.0” era. After initially joking that she had plenty of “options” on the dating scene, sources confirmed that she has quietly moved on with Nashville-based roadie and musician Thomas Eisenhood.

While the two are taking things slow to ensure stability for her kids, insiders report that Simpson is genuinely happy and excited about this new chapter.
