Mattel is honoring what would have been late screen icon Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday with a striking new collectible Barbie inspired by her most celebrated movie moment. The release gives longtime fans and doll collectors a fresh way to celebrate the screen legend’s enduring legacy.
This special-edition design recreated the unmistakable style that cemented Monroe’s status as a pop culture icon. The doll pays homage to a landmark scene that defined an era of cinema.
Barbie’s Tribute to Marilyn Monroe’s Most Iconic Film Scene
Barbie’s latest tribute doll honors screen goddess Marilyn Monroe. The collectible captures a scene from her famous scene in the feature film, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”
In the scene, Monroe sings “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” while wearing a legendary pink silk strapless gown. The outfit was complete with matching opera gloves and oversized rhinestone jewelry.
The performance remains one of the most celebrated musical numbers in Hollywood history. It permanently defined her image as a pop culture icon.
According to People Magazine, Mattel, Barbie’s creators, “collaborated closely with The Estate of Marilyn Monroe LLC to bring the creation to life.” This is the fourth in a series of Barbie dolls reimagined in Monroe’s likeness. Others featured scenes from the films “The Seven Year Itch,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” and “How to Marry a Millionaire.”
Variety shared a statement from Robert Best, Mattel’s vice president and dolls design creative director. He said, “Barbie has a rich history of celebrating Marilyn Monroe’s legendary style as both a fashion icon and beloved actress.” He wanted the doll to reflect her legacy as “a savvy producer, a businesswoman and a boundary-breaking artist.”
Fans Weighed in On the New Collectible Barbie
In the comments section of an Instagram post shared by Mattel, fans weighed in with their thoughts about the collectible doll. While some loved the likeness, others weren’t too sure.
“I honestly was hoping for something different from any of the previous Mattel Marilyn dolls. Why not do the stunning tangerine orange gown from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes?’ Or her red iconic dress from ‘Niagara?’ Maybe someday,” wrote one follower.
A second Instagram user wrote, “Y’all have made so many celebrity dolls that actually look like the person why couldn’t you make this doll actually look like Marilyn?”
“I think I’ll buy it after all. I kind of like it,” exclaimed a third social media user.
A fourth fan concluded, “And she’s absolutely stunning.”
The iconic moment captured in the fourth Monroe interpretation came straight from the “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” scene in the 1953 musical comedy “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” directed by Howard Hawks. Marilyn Monroe stars as Lorelei Lee, a showgirl on a quest for financial security, alongside her sharp-witted brunette best friend and co-star, Jane Russell, who plays Dorothy Shaw.
Dressed in designer William Travilla’s iconic hot-pink silk strapless gown, matching opera gloves, and oversized rhinestone jewelry, Marilyn Monroe turned what could have been a cynical song about transactional love into a masterclass in star power. It remains one of her most iconic performances to this day.
