Iconic Italian Fashion Designer Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91: Tributes Pour In

Giorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer who defined 1980s style and went on to shape global fashion for decades, has died at the age of 91. The Armani Group confirmed his passing on Monday.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the company said in a statement.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

The designer’s passing comes just weeks after he celebrated his 91st birthday on July 11. A towering figure in fashion, Armani was both a creative visionary and a hands-on leader, remaining actively involved in his company until his passing.

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani acknowledges the audience at the end of his Women’s Fall-Winter 2019/2020 Haute Couture collection fashion show in Paris, on July 2, 2019.

Armani is remembered as the man who designed “the uniform of aspiration,” a style that defined the power-dressing culture of the 1980s and cemented his place in fashion history.

By 1982, just seven years after founding his brand, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine, a mark of global cultural recognition.

Building a Global Fashion Empire

More than a designer, Armani was one of Italy’s most successful entrepreneurs. He was the sole shareholder of his company, Giorgio Armani S.p.A., which grew from a small startup in 1975 into a global empire spanning apparel, accessories, hotels, homewares, and even confectionery.

Funded by the sale of his Volkswagen Beetle, Armani’s company went on to achieve revenues of 2.1 billion euros in 2019 and employ around 8,000 people worldwide. His personal fortune has been estimated at $11 billion.

Tributes Celebrate Armani’s Legacy

One comment read: “He was a fashion icon. Rest in peace, Giorgio. Ciao! 🙏🏻❤️”

Another said: “Forever an icon 🥹❤️”

Another fan wrote: “Giorgio, thank you for all the Beauty and Elegance you brought into the world! Condolences to family and friends 🖤”

A Lasting Legacy Beyond Fashion

Widely regarded as the most successful Italian fashion designer in history, Armani transformed not just the way people dressed but also the way they saw themselves. His designs reflected power, elegance, and timeless simplicity, leaving a mark that extended far beyond the runway.

As his company noted, Armani worked tirelessly until his final days. His influence, creativity, and legacy will continue to inspire generations of designers, models, and style enthusiasts around the world.
