Jake Reiner is speaking publicly about the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, as his younger brother faces murder charges in connection with their deaths.
Eight months after Rob and Michele were fatally stabbed inside their Brentwood, California, home, Jake spoke with KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles about his parents, his childhood and the devastating changes his family has faced.
A portion of the interview aired Thursday, Aug. 27, on “Good Morning America.”
“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,” Jake said.
Jake Opens Up About the Day He Found Out His Parents Passed
Jake said the passage of time has been difficult to process since his parents’ deaths.
“It’s been 8 months. It feels like 8 years at the same time. And it also feels like 8 minutes,” he said. “Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
Jake also recalled learning that something had happened to his parents.
He was attending a celebration of life for one of his best friends, who died in October 2025, when his sister Romy called him.
“Romy told me our dad was dead and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom,’” Jake recalled.
Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were killed on Dec. 14, 2025. Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested hours after their bodies were discovered. He has since been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty.
The deaths have left Jake and Romy grieving their parents while also dealing with Nick’s incarceration.
Jake previously described the situation as losing more than half of his family. During his new interview, he acknowledged how his brother’s arrest has added another layer to the loss.
“Yeah. I mean, he’s in jail, so …,” Jake said, pausing. “You know, it’s … I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy.”
Jake Previously Shared an Essay
Jake previously shared more about his grief in a Substack essay following his parents’ deaths.
“I was robbed of so many things that day. My parents won’t be at my wedding, they won’t get to hold their future grandchild, and they won’t get to see me have the successful career I’m still seeking. It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me,” he wrote.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend,” Jake continued. “I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.”
In the essay, Jake remembered the moment his sister called him with the news.
“It was at that moment I received a call from my sister Romy telling me our father was dead. Minutes later, she called back telling me our mother was also dead,” he wrote. “My world, as I knew it, had collapsed.”
Jake said his parents were the “center of my life” and reflected on the memories they created together.
He recalled his close relationship with his mother and spoke fondly of spending time with his father, including attending Dodgers games and Broadway musicals.
While the criminal case against Nick continues, Jake is trying to navigate life without both of his parents and preserve the memories of the family he knew before the tragedy.
