Beloved Actor Passes Away at 70 as Tributes Pour In

Hollywood is in mourning as actor Michael Wright, known for iconic films such as “The Five Heartbeats” and “The Principle,” has passed away. This comes after the legendary actor began his career in the late 1970s and continued working for the next several decades, including a project that was never released.

Wright’s wife, Susan, announced the news of Wright’s passing on Instagram on August 21. She did so by posting eight photos, with the first being of the two of them. She captioned the photo, “It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright.”

After that, she used the post to pay tribute to the man Wright was, saying, “Michael was a husband, a father (Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr, Sir Barr, a grandfather (Yoko), loved one, a friend, and an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations.”

Wright’s wife continued her emotional post about his passing, highlighting his legacy as both an actor and a family man. She said, “Many knew and loved him through The Five Heartbeats, The Wanderers, V, The Principal, Streamers, and the many other characters he brought to life throughout his remarkable career. His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.”

She then said, “Our family is grieving an enormous and deeply personal loss. We understand how much Michael meant to so many people, and we are grateful for the love, prayers, memories, and condolences already being shared.”

After that, the grieving wife asked the public for privacy. She then stated, “In the coming days, when we are ready, we will share additional information regarding Michael’s life, legacy, and how we intend to honor and celebrate him.”

In addition to his wife’s words, fans of the legendary actor are paying tribute to his legacy. For many, much of the adoration comes from his role as Eddie in “The Five Heartbeats.”

One person on X said, “Such a dope and underrated actor. As much as I loved him in ‘The 5 Heartbeats’ and ‘Sugar Hill,’ Aaron in ‘Money Talks’ is probably my favorite role of his. Long live Michael Wright.”

Someone else wrote, “Rest easy, Michael Wright. Eddie King…. or Eddie Kang, you left a lasting impression on all of us…..” A different fan stated, “Rest in peace, Michael Wright. This hurts, as we witnessed him in classics.”

Actress and comedian Loni Love also paid tribute to Wright. She wrote on X, “The underrated actor Michael Wright has passed. His wife made an announcement on IG. He was known for his incredible roles in the films ‘The Five Heartbeats’ (1991), ‘Streamers’ (1983) for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, and ‘Sugar Hill’
(1994), and for his television roles as Elias Taylor in ‘V: The Series’ (1984-1985), [2) Omar White in ‘Oz’ (2001-
2003), and ‘Lazarus Prime’ in Black Lightning (2019). Prayers to his family and fans.

Per IMDb, Wright’s first on-screen role came in 1979 when he appeared in The Wanderers as Clinton. After that, he appeared in multiple TV movies in the early 1980s, including “Dream House.” Regarding the role he’s best known for, “The Five Heartbeats” was released in theaters in 1991.

Regarding the latter part of his career, Wright appeared in “Black Lightning” and “Transitions” in 2019, and then in “Dope King” in 2025. The actor has one project, “Brass Knuckles,” in pre-production.
