Nicole Kidman Explains Surprising Career Change: ‘It’s Very Important to Me’

Nicole Kidman isn’t walking away from Hollywood, but she is working to add another line to her resume.

Kidman revealed that she is in the training process of becoming a death doula.

Nicole Kidman’s Career Change

The “Big Little Lies” star opened up about her goal of becoming a death doula during a conversation with Hoda Kotb at a HISTORYTalks event on Saturday, April 18, according to People.

“It’s helping people in the end stage of life, it’s helping the families, it’s being present, impartial,” Kidman explained of her career choice.

She added, “I think it’s fascinating. It’s, it’s a really fascinating, it’s very beautiful, and you have to be a certain personality to be able to do it, but I found out that I’m actually that personality.”

Kidman, who lost her mother Janelle Ann Kidman in September 2024, previously revealed how her mother’s passing opened her eyes to the new career.

“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” she told investigative journalist and USF graduate Vicky Nguyen earlier this month, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care,'” she explained. “So that’s part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning.”

Nicole Kidman Is Becoming a Death Doula

A “death doula,” also known as an “end of life doula,” is “a nonmedical companion who provides personalized and compassionate support to individuals, families, and their circles of care as they encounter and navigate death, loss, and mortality,” according to INELDA.

The Australian actress told Kotb that she believes death doulas are “a huge necessity.”

“It’s very important to me. There is always suffering in life, right?” she continued, per People. “But if there [are] people there who can help with that and can help those final stages be less painful, you can feel the connection and the love, then that is a lovely thing to be able to do. So that’s what I’m exploring.”

In addition to the death of her mother following a long illness, Kidman lost her father, Antony Kidman, who died of a heart attack in September 2014.

  1. It is very disingenuous that a woman is worth a purported $250 million dollars couldn’t put her career on old to spend time with her dying mother, then after her mother’s death, allegedly wants to become a death doula for people other than her family.
