PHOTOS: The ‘Cast Away’ Cast Then & Now

Robert Zemeckis’ “Cast Away” is one of the most notable and memorable movies of the 2000s.

The brilliant survival drama follows a FedEx systems analyst who, after being the sole survivor of a plane crash in the South Pacific, gets stranded on a deserted island. The plot focuses on his desperate attempts to stay alive and, ultimately, return home.

It stars Tom Hanks as the stranded man and Helen Hunt as the girlfriend he left behind, along with a small, intimate supporting cast (the story deliberately minimizes the appearance of other notable human characters to emphasize themes of solitude, survival, and loss).

“Cast Away” boasts a hugely impressive 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was nominated for Best Sound at the Academy Awards, while Hanks received a Best Actor nomination. The movie grossed over $427 million worldwide after being produced on a budget of $85 million (per The Numbers).

It was released on December 22, 2000, meaning it’s just celebrated its 25th anniversary. With that in mind, wouldn’t it be cool to see its core cast members today compared to how they looked back when the film hit theaters? Let’s do that now…

Various Volleyballs (Wilson)

Various volleyballs played Wilson in “Cast Away.” Wilson is Chuck Noland’s improvised “companion” on the desert island and one of the most iconic elements of the movie. After Chuck draws a face on a Wilson-brand volleyball (using his own blood), he personifies it as a friend to combat his loneliness and maintain sanity while he’s stranded. It may be an inanimate object, but Wilson is treated as a major “character” in the story and pop culture.

Around 12 volleyballs were used to portray Wilson in the movie, due to wear and tear and the character’s “evolution” (for instance, Chuck added “hair” to Wilson using tobacco stalks).

In 2021, one of the Wilson props was sold at auction for a staggering $308,000 (per BBC).

Age now: N/A.
Selected movie credits after “Cast Away”: N/A.

It’s great to see all four of the human core cast members of “Cast Away” doing so well — and even better to know there are Wilson props still out there fetching staggering sums at auction.
