GH’s Jane Elliot on Losing Leslie Charleson ‘Twice’

It has been a painful week in Port Charles, as family and residents alike are grieving the loss of Dr. Monica Quartermaine. Tracy Quartermaine has been absolutely devastated by the loss of her sister-in-law, and while the two women fought often, they also loved and respected each other deeply.

Monica’s memorial service will air on Sept. 25-26th, and Jane Elliot, who plays Tracy, is sharing her thoughts. The actress opened up about saying goodbye twice in an interview with Variety.

Jane Elliot and Leslie Charleson became “General Hospital” co-stars in 1978, but as it turns out, they met long before that.

“Leslie Charleson and I met in the ’60s when I was in a play on Broadway, and she was dating a guy in the cast. She would come and hang out in my dressing room,” Elliot explained.

Fast-forward to the modern-day GH, where Monica Quartermaine hasn’t been seen on camera for many months due to Charleson’s health issues. The actress passed away in January 2025, but the soap kept her character alive and out of sight until September 2025. Elliot told Variety that it made her grieving process even harder.

“It extended the mourning because we had to keep her alive when she wasn’t. I had to mourn her death twice.” After spending so many years working together, the actress says that their real lives and their characters all overlapped.

“Monica was Leslie, and Leslie was Monica. I had shared experience with Monica, and I had shared experience with Leslie, so she left me twice.”

Losing Monica Is Like ‘Losing an Arm’

Jane Elliot has been grieving the loss of Leslie Charleson all year, but her character’s journey through grief has just begun. Tracy has lost her parents, Edward and Lila, and her beloved brother, Alan. Then she lost Luke Spencer, the love of her life. When it comes to Monica, Elliot says, “They were the last two standing. So losing her was like losing an arm.”

Monica Quartermaine’s memorial service will be shared by cast members and fans of “General Hospital” alike on Sept. 25, 2025. Port Charles will never be quite the same without her. How do you think that Tracy will handle the loss of her long-running frenemy? Will she lean on her family, or will she shut them out?
