NBC Pulled the Plug on This Long-Running Soap Opera After 35 Seasons—and Fans Still Aren’t Over It

The soap opera “Another World” may have ended more than two decades ago, but fans are still talking about its cancellation.

The NBC series, which premiered in 1964, ran for 35 seasons before the network canceled it in 1999. The decision came as part of a broader shift in NBC’s daytime programming, but longtime viewers have continued to revisit the moment years later.

On May 4, fans marked 62 years since the debut of “Another World,” a series created by Irna Phillips that helped shape modern daytime television.

‘Another World’ Cancellation Still Resonates With Soap Opera Fans

“Another World” followed the lives of people in the fictional Midwestern town of Bay City, centering on their relationships, families, and everyday highs and lows. Over the years, the show also took on storylines that were considered ahead of their time.

According to Soaps.com, the series was the first soap opera to address abortion and one of the first to feature a crossover storyline, bringing a character from “Guiding Light” into its universe.

Despite its longevity and influence, NBC canceled the show in 1999 after 35 seasons. The move remains a topic of discussion among viewers.

In a Reddit thread launched in 2024, fans continued to share their reactions. One viewer wrote, “That was my favorite show. I miss it to this day,” while another said, “Still not over losing Another World. I cried during the last episodes.”

Others pointed to specific characters and storylines that made the show memorable.

“I miss this soap and characters like Rachel, Felicia, and Cass who were so complex and compelling to watch,” another fan shared.

The Beloved Soap Opera Helped Launch Major Hollywood Careers

During its run, “Another World” became an early stepping stone for several actors who would go on to major Hollywood success. Brad Pitt had a small role early in his career, and Morgan Freeman was part of the cast in the 1960s before making his move into film.

Lindsay Lohan also appeared on the show as a child actor. Anne Heche earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her dual role as Vicky Hudson and Marley Love, and Marisa Tomei had an early role on the series before her Academy Award-winning career.

Julianne Moore became one of the show’s most recognized alumni, winning a Daytime Emmy before moving into film and television roles.

‘Another World’ Legacy Continues Following Cast Losses

According to US Weekly, the show returned to public attention in 2022 following the deaths of several former cast members.

Heche, who starred on the series in the late 1980s and early 1990s, died on August 12, 2022, after injuries sustained in a car crash in Los Angeles.

Robyn Griggs, who portrayed Maggie Cory in the mid-1990s, died on August 13, 2022, at age 49 after battling cervical cancer.

Two months earlier, Ray Liotta, who appeared on “Another World” early in his career, died in his sleep at age 67 while working on a film in the Dominican Republic.

Liotta’s role as Joey Perrini marked one of his first steady acting jobs before his later success in films such as “Goodfellas.”
