Bachelor Nation’s Joe Amabile, 40, shared a hopeful update one week after undergoing brain surgery.
Amabile took to Instagram on Wednesday, August 12, to share his recovery after having a brain tumor removed on August 6.
According to Amabile, he was unable to speak properly following his craniectomy, explaining that “knowing what to say but not being able to say it” was difficult.
Amabile noted in his video that after one week, despite doctors being able to remove the entire tumor, a low-grade astrocytoma was detected and will result in ongoing treatment.
Joe Amabile Says Recovery Has Been ‘Better Than Expected’
“When it comes to malignant brain tumors, they don’t know what’s left over. So I will be going on treatment, which is just a pill every day for the rest of my life,” Amabile said.
According to Cleveland Clinic, astrocytomas “are tumors that typically form in your brain but can develop in your spinal cord as well.”
Amabile explained in his Instagram caption that despite his post-surgery prognosis, recovery has been better than he expected.
“It’s going well! Recovery has been better than even I expected and I’m a pretty positive person. A big thank you to Dr. Golfinos and his team @nyulangone. They really have been wonderful. I know a lot of you have reached out with so much love and support and it means a lot. If I haven’t got back to you it’s not because I didn’t see it, it’s because I don’t like you. Lol jk. I love you guys, I’ve just been very overwhelmed and focused on rest/recovery but the support means so much,” Amabile wrote.
In July, Amabile revealed he was diagnosed with early-stage glioma after doctors detected a blueberry-sized brain tumor following a full-body MRI scan.
According to Cleveland Clinic, glioma occurs when nerve cells in the brain and/or spinal cord grow at an uncontrollable rate, leading to potential tumor growth.
Joe Amabile Talks About Having a Positive Mindset
The “Bachelor” star previously opened up about his brain tumor diagnosis on the “Not Married to This” podcast with his wife, Serena Pitt, where he explained his positive outlook going forward.
“I’m not one of those people like, ‘Oh, it’s all about mindset.’ But I do believe going into this positive and with a positive mindset and keeping my stress levels low is the best thing I could do for my health in this current moment. I am staying positive. I think it’s great that we caught this early,” Amabile said during the July 16 episode.
After Amabile’s surgery, his wife shared photos on Instagram of the “Bachelor” star in recovery mode. In her 12-photo carousel, Pitt thanked the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where Amabile underwent his procedure.
“Incredibly grateful to the team at NYU Langone Health for their endless patience, care, compassion, and kindness these past few days. Joe is home recovering, and we’re so grateful to have been in such good hands,” Pitt wrote.
