‘Practical Magic 2’ Star Remains Respectful in Response to Critics

It’s not easy taking on a role in a fan-favorite sequel. Everyone is going to have thoughts and comments going in, and Joey King found herself at the heart of some of those as everyone gets ready for “Practical Magic 2.” It doesn’t help that the movie hasn’t even been released yet, so many were making comments based on what they know of King from previous work until they saw the movie at the premiere over the weekend.

King will take on the role of Kylie Owens, the daughter of Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens. She is joined by “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams, who will play Antonia in the long-awaited sequel. However, it’s been mostly King who has taken on the brunt of the hate, and she remained respectful in responses.

When a critic took to TikTok to share their dislike for the casting, King replied in the comments to make it clear that it was seen. Rather than fire back with hatred, E! News reported that King shared how much she hoped that the critic (and others with similar views) would like the movie.

In fact, she empathized with the critic, noting, “I know it’s hard sometimes when legacy sequels are made, and casting is different than what certain people envisioned, but I only ask that you open your mind a little and see how much fun I had making it.”

This was not a role that she took on lightly, being a fan of “Practical Magic,” which was released almost 30 years ago. She had already made it clear that she is a big fan of the original movie, and she felt like having that connection would make the performance more profound.

It also helped that King and Nicole Kidman had a previous working relationship. Kidman played King’s mom in a movie a few years ago, and now she gets to play her aunt, with Bullock playing her mom. In fact, Bullock made sure to take on a motherly role outside of the movie, taking both King and Williams under her wing to protect the original intent.

The response from King to the critic came off as both respectful and kind. In the end, the critic shared positive vibes after watching the premiere, saying, “Yeah…you tore me up. Sorry queen.”

‘Practical Magic 2’ Is Set 25 Years Later

After 27 years of waiting, “Practical Magic 2” is almost here, hitting theaters on Sept. 11, 2026. It is set 25 years after the events of the first movie, bringing a new threat to the Owens family. It’s time for them to learn more about the origins of their family’s magical secret, leading to Sally’s daughter Kylie developing her own dark abilities.

If the family wants to regain control, they will need to face the multi-generational struggle that has cursed them. That means traveling to the UK to confront the source of their magic.

As well as Bullock and Kidman returning, so will Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest. Williams will take on the role of Kylie’s younger sister, Antonia, and “Cobra Kai’s” Xolo Maridueña will play her love interest. As for the threat against Kylie, Solly McLeod will take on that role as Thomas Lockland.
