From her scene-stealing brilliance in “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind,” to her early comedy roots on “SCTV,” and her Emmy-winning portrayal of Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek.”

O’Hara first crossed paths with Bo Welch on the set of “Beetlejuice” in 1988, where Welch was working as a production designer.

The two quickly formed a natural connection, talking often and falling into an easy rhythm, even as the relationship remained unspoken. Despite the closeness, Welch never took the step to ask her out.

Years later, O’Hara shared that she eventually confided her frustration to director Tim Burton, who quietly intervened.

“I was grouching to Tim Burton about how this guy was talking to me all the time and never asking me out,” O’Hara told InStyle in 2018.

“We had a break between filming in Los Angeles and on location, and in that time, Tim told Bo that he should ask me out.”

With a gentle push from Burton, Welch finally found the nerve to ask O’Hara out, and the connection deepened quickly. At the time, O’Hara was based in Canada, but as the relationship became more serious, she made a life-altering choice.

In a 2019 interview with The New Yorker, O’Hara shared that she moved to Los Angeles to be with Welch. “I moved to L.A. to be with him. Yeah, I moved for love,” she said.

The leap marked the start of a lasting chapter. O’Hara and Welch married in 1992, beginning a partnership that would endure for more than three decades.

A Wedding Gift Straight Out of a Movie

Their wedding came with an unforgettable surprise, thanks to Burton. As a gift, he arranged a private tour of the Vatican for the newlyweds, turning their celebration into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Somebody had given it to him. It was a very inside kind of deal,” O’Hara recalled during an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

She later described the moment with her trademark wit and sense of wonder. “Ok, so a priest took us around — he got yelled at at one point. I wish I spoke Italian, but he was definitely getting yelled at by another priest because we were in the pope’s closet, like, looking at garments and stuff. It was crazy.”

The memory only grew more surreal as the tour continued.

“And this priest is just letting us open cases, and pretending to put a crown inside Bo’s backpack, taking pictures,” she added, recalling a moment that became one of the couple’s most cherished shared stories.
