Best known as Xander on the hit 90s tv show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, Nicholas Brendon has tragically passed away. The actor was 54 years old.
GettyAffectionately known as Nicky, Nicholas Brendon worked steadily as an actor after “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” until near the end of his life. His final credited movie role in the 2024 thriller “Christmas Slasher.” He had recurring roles in television including “Criminal Minds” where he played the technical analyst Kevin Lynch.
Due to health issues, including paralysis from a spinal injury in 2021 and a subsequent cardiac incident, he stepped back from full-time acting to focus on painting and reducing stress.
The “Buffy” Star’s Final Appearance and Words to Fans
In his final days, the beloved actor took to his social media to interact with his fans, answering questions and reading fan comments. His last Instagram post before he passed away was from a live video captioned “Candle time with Nicky.”
In 2021, Brendon suffered a serious spinal injury/paralysis, requiring emergency surgery. In 2022 and 2023, he was hospitalized for a “cardiac incident” and a congenital heart defect (a condition sometimes common in twins, as he had an identical twin brother).
Aware of his struggles with his health, physical and mental, as well as substance abuse and legal trouble, fan reactions during and after his final Instagram live session were mixed. Some comments showed concern over his demeanor and appearance and others were just happy to have their questions answered by one of their favorite nostalgic tv stars.
One comment said,
“I knew he was not well and in pain with these last videos, wished I lived close so I could check on him, seemed so sad.”
While another fan commented, “What happened to him? He’s unrecognizable.” Another comment offered words of encouragement, “Chronic pain is awful. Stay strong and small steps each day to recovery. Be kind to yourself and take time out to just meditate or silence in nature helps me.”
After his passing fans have flooded this same video with condolences and sharing their thoughts on the tragic incident.
Nicholas Brendon Tragically Passes Away
GettyBrendon passed away in his sleep on Friday, March 20, 2026. In a statement his family shared that “Nicky” was sensitive, passionate, and endlessly driven to create. They told the Hollywood Reporter,
“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
Nicholas Brendon will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans all over the world.
