‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Star Tragically Passes Away at 54 — He Will Be Missed

Nicholas Brendon, who was best known for his role as Xander Harris in the beloved television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” passed away on Friday, March 20, at the age of 54.

His family confirmed the news in a heartbreaking statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement said. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes.”

“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years,” the family continued. “In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.

“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” they concluded. “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

Along with his role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Brendon had numerous other roles, including a recurring one as Kevin Lynch in “Criminal Minds.”

“Nicholas Brendon brought so much warmth and humor to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Xander, one of those characters who felt real, flawed, and deeply human. May he rest in peace, and may his work continue to live on in the hearts of those who grew up watching him,” one fan shared.


Nicholas Brendon Was Open About His Struggles With Substance Abuse

Throughout his life, Brendon struggled with substance abuse and had mental health struggles. He often would issue apologies due to his actions that led to multiple arrests. And he even went on an episode of Dr. Phil to talk about it.

Along with his substance abuse struggles, Brendon suffered a heart attack and was also diagnosed with a congenital heart defect in 2023, per The Hollywood Reporter. He also had cauda equina syndrome, which led to several spinal surgeries.
