Jelly Roll is opening up about how his recent tour impacted his mental health. While he loves performing and sharing his music with fans, the “American Idol” season 23 artist-in-residence admits that he was “doing the worst mentally.” Find out more about how touring left Jelly Roll feeling isolated and homesick.
Jelly Roll Reveals He Was ‘Doing the Worst Mentally’
In a November 2025 interview with Kate Langbroek for the “No Filter” podcast, Jelly Roll vulnerably shared that touring had taken a toll on him.
When asked how he handles his mental health while traveling, he responded, “Oh, it’s a bad week to ask me. I’m falling apart. It’s a horrible week.”
Jelly Roll continued, “Yeah, I’m doing the worst mentally I’ve done in a long time. I’m really far from home and it’s really hitting me that I’m really far from home, like in an anxious way.”
He also shared that he had experienced stomach issues. “When my stomach’s not right, nothing’s right. My mind’s not right. Everything. I’m just not thinking clear,” the singer said.
Jelly Roll noted that isolation does a lot of damage. “I’m having to be super isolated. I don’t like it,” he said. “I’m spending a lot of time in my hotel room by myself, just in my head. I don’t like it. I’m not having fun and I want to go home. I miss my family a ton.”
The singer explained, “Everybody wants to go home when they’re sick. That’s just in us … I just don’t feel good, so I just want to go home.”
Jelly Roll canceled his show in Auckland, New Zealand. Live Nation issued a statement that explained, “We regret to announce the Jelly Roll Down Under 2025 Tour tonight at The Outer Fields at Western Springs in Auckland will no longer go ahead due to illness.”
The singer also apologized for the cancellation, taking to Instagram to explain: “Dear Auckland, I’ve done everything I can. I just can’t shake it. It breaks my heart — I’ve probably missed three shows in the last decade. I pride myself on showing up no matter what. Just couldn’t do it this time. Please forgive me.”
Jelly Roll Reveals He’s ‘Becoming a Way Better Human’
The singer has been on a weight loss journey, losing over 200 pounds so far. During a November 2025 appearance on “The Hot Hits With Nic & Loren,” Jelly Roll was asked about some of the ways his life has changed since losing weight.
He’s experienced the physical rewards of slimming down, but said he’s also had a shift in his attitude.
“I sleep better, I walk better, I talk better. I have more energy,” Jelly Roll said. “I’m nicer.”
Jelly Roll admitted that his personality was quite different before his weight loss. “I was a mean, fat person. I was a cocky, arrogant, fat [expletive],” he said.
The singer shared, “Like what? It’s crazy. Somebody was like, ‘You’re going to get a six-pack and turn into a monster.’ I was like, ‘I’m actually becoming a way better human.’ I don’t hate my life as much. You know what I mean?”
