A new social media post has given the public the opportunity to see a glimpse into the private life of James Cameron. The Instagram post from Roger Perry Homes provides a look at the former California estate of the acclaimed filmmaker before he made his move to New Zealand.
Best known for his work on the likes of “Titanic” and the “Avatar” franchise, Cameron originally put the large property on the market for $33 million in 2023, before it sold a year later at a significant discount.

The California Ranch Where James Cameron Wrote ‘Avatar’
Inside the extensive ranch estate, there’s a 8,000 square foot main residence alongside several other large structures. These include a 2,000 square foot guest house and a barn that takes in approximately 24,000 square feet of space.
Located along the Gaviota Coast in Santa Barbara County, California, Cameron and his wife first purchased the home in 1999 for just $4.4 million. It boasts vaulted ceilings, a centerpiece stone fireplace, a private gym, media room, and game room.
There’s also a number of other amenities, ranging from a lagoon-style swimming pool, a tennis court, several large gardens, and equestrian facilities for horse riding. A helipad is available, allowing the owners to fly directly to the estate.
Additionally, Cameron also had access to two offices in the building, something that proved useful when he was writing the record-breaking “Avatar.” The filmmaker previously revealed that he would use one of the offices, which features a library and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Speaking to Forbes, Cameron said, “I would just bounce up there and sequester myself for months on end” while writing the movie.
It was put up for sale in 2023 with an asking price of $33 million. This was later reduced to $28.5 million after it failed to sell for several months and ultimately was sold at $26 million.
James Cameron Opens Up About Moving to New Zealand With His Wife
Cameron put the 102 acre estate on the market after deciding to move permanently to New Zealand, where he now resides with his wife Suzy Amis Cameron.
In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Cameron admitted that he has now left the US for good and will continue to reside in New Zealand into the future. His family first moved to the country after the COVID-19 pandemic and is hoping to get citizenship.
“Where would you rather live,” Cameron asked during the interview. “A place that actually believes in science and is sane and where people can work together cohesively to a common goal, or a place where everybody’s at each other’s throats, extremely polarised, turning its back on science and basically would be in utter disarray if another pandemic appears.”
Meanwhile, a report from The Hollywood Reporter gave some insight into the private life of the Cameron family. Amis revealed, “It’s us walking around the house in socks, being voracious readers, building fires, and hanging out — after 30 years, there’s never a moment we don’t have something to talk about.”
