There were plenty of reasons to skip “Supergirl” in theaters, with one of the biggest being the cost. It also arrived in the middle of the summer, when you want to spend time with family on patios, at the beach, and on vacation. You’re forgiven for wanting to watch it at home.
Maybe you did go to see it in theaters and are just ready to watch it again at home. The great news is that you’ll be able to do that this week, as HBO Max has set the release date for the Milly Alcock movie.
When Is ‘Supergirl’ on HBO Max?
In some bad news, “Supergirl” isn’t heading to Netflix. That doesn’t mean it won’t in the future, but for now, there is only one streaming home: HBO Max. The Warner Bros. streamer has confirmed that the James Gunn movie will arrive on Sept. 10, 2026.

If you love to watch movies on the cable channel, then you’ll need to wait until Friday, Sept. 11, when it will air at 8 p.m. ET. You’ll be able to watch on HBO Max any time that you want, so it is worth getting your hands on that streaming platform.
This is 76 days after it was released in theaters, showing that Warner Bros. isn’t quite back to the 90-day exclusivity window for theaters, but is sticking to a rough timeframe for releases on streaming. “Superman” arrived after 70 days in theaters, and “Weapons” landed on HBO Max after 77 days.
Will ‘Supergirl’ Come to Netflix?
GettyOf course, most people want to watch shows and movies on Netflix. It’s the biggest platform, and the one that the majority of houses have access to. As of right now, don’t expect “Supergirl” on Netflix, but never say “never.”
Warner Bros. and Netflix can create licensing deals at times. In some cases, they’re exclusive agreements, but there have been many non-exclusive agreements between Netflix and other streaming platforms recently. It took just five months for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to arrive on Netflix after its HBO Max debut, while “Evil Dead Rise” took 15 months. So, there is a chance that fans will get to watch “Supergirl” on Netflix in 2027.
This Is a DC Movie for the Viewers
GettyWhile the Alcock movie didn’t perform well at the box office, it’s one of those that landed well with the audience members. It holds a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many commenting that the effects and Alcock’s acting were good. The biggest complaints were over the writing, but the overall feel was an enjoyable movie.
One user shared, “Milly Alcock is exceptional here. She makes Supergirl feel real—strong, funny, messy, angry, vulnerable, wounded, and deeply human—without ever becoming hokey the way superhero characters sometimes can.”
Another shared, “This movie was pretty good, I thought it was a lot better than the last Superman movie.”
This is Kara’s redemption arc within the new DCU, with a leading woman learning how to grow up and shake off a traumatic childhood. There are hypocritical decisions made throughout, but that’s the beauty of it, as it’s a story of growth and learning. In fact, many of the positive reviews outside of the acting have been that it was a “human superhero movie.”
