Nathan Fillion is largely considered one of the main players of James Gunn’s DCU. His character, Guy Gardner provides consistent and necessary comic relief among the dark tone DC is widely recognized for. Fillion usually only plays minor roles within each project, but those lesser moments have made him a major figure within the franchise.
The actor recently confirmed, in an interview with EntertainmentWeekly, that his character receives an updated look for the next Superman film. He looks virtually identical between “Superman” and “Lanterns” signifying the events happen relatively close together. Yet, Fillion has also assured fans that the look likely won’t be too different. Either way, the hero will continue providing fans a consistent laugh among the franchise’s relatively intense moments.
Fillion Is Becoming the New Face of the DCU
Based on current and upcoming projects, Fillion has starred in more DCU projects than any other actor. Since starring in Superman, he clearly struck a chord with audiences which is why DC consistently places him within their projects. Gardner is obviously set to be a larger figure in the “Lanterns” mythos, but he is becoming a major figure within the DCU as a whole. Guy Gardner typically isn’t at the forefront of DC’s lineup, but James Gunn take on the franchise is anything but standard.
Through his intriguing franchise lineup, Gunn proves he’s willing to experiment with the cinematic universe. Instead of focusing on well-known major figures, like Batman, Gunn has chosen to utilize lesser known characters within the multiverse. The DC Co-Chair is likely doing this to ensure fans recognize the stranger characters as they appear in major projects, but his true intentions remain unknown. Nevertheless, his work on “Guardians of the Galaxy” proves that the director doesn’t shy away from the unorthodox.
Gunn’s interesting showcases are a large reason why Fillion has taken the forefront in Gunn’s DCU. Guy Gardner is relatively obscure within the actual comic source material. Now that the character has taken such a major stage in the DCU, his comic counterpart will likely follow suit. Nevertheless, Guy Gardner isn’t the only major hero returning in the highly anticipated upcoming Superman sequel.

Obviously, the main cast of the original film will make appearances within the sequel. John Cena’s Peacemaker will also appear in the film. When Gunn first took the reigns of the DCU many fans assumed that Peacemaker would take the role seemingly filled by Guy Gardner. Sadly, Peacemaker’s more adult tone prevents him from starring in every project.

Nonetheless, Guy Gardner remains the only character to star in five individual DC projects, will many more likely on the way. No one could’ve anticipated the impact such an insignificant character like Guy Gardner would have on the DC franchise, but DC fans are eating it up.
Ultimately, only time will tell to see if Gardner will become the new face of the DCU or another character will replace him. Gunn likely envisions David Corenswet as his leading man, but Fillion has starred in far more projects. He might be sporting a slightly updated design in the upcoming sequel,
