The superhero genre is one of the most popular and profitable film categories of all time. This success caused superhero projects to transcend the silver screen, and bleed into similar media, like television. Incredible series have come out of this transition including the latest and greatest James Gunn’s DCU has to offer, “Lanterns.”
Despite significant scrutiny surrounding the project, the series’ premiere was a critical success. Fans who might’ve been put off by the show’s promotional material were immediately put at ease. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre work perfectly together, and as incredibly compelling standalone leads. Although the series initially appeared like a run-of-the-mill crime drama, its execution is greater than anything fans expected.
The DCU Lands Another Major Win With ‘Lanterns’
“Lanterns” is another historic win in a series of significant successes for Gunn’s DCU. The cinematic universe ironically started with the widely enjoyed “Creature Commandoes,” before breaking into the live-action content fans have come to expect. 2025s “Superman” was a massive box office success, leading many to believe the franchise could finally contend with the ever popular MCU.
The cinematic universe would have some minor hiccups, most notably with 2026s “Supergirl.” Yet, Marvel has managed to find continuous success without every single film landing with audiences. One single miss for DC isn’t enough for the cinematic universe to fall apart. Furthermore, DC’s latest project already resonates with fans.
The series only began airing August 16, 2026 and many are already calling it one of 2026’s best shows. Every part of the show is astoundingly well developed and expertly executed. The casting, costumes, scoring and effects are everything fans have come to expect from the DCU and more. However, the series’ highlight is easily the breathtaking chemistry between Chandler and Pierre.
Chandler and Pierre’s Chemistry is a Series’ Highlight
Chandler plays Hal Jordan, a veteran Green Lantern forced to train his replacement. Pierre plays Jordan’s eager replacement, John Stuart, who spent his entire life in preparation to join the corps. Each actor brings something unique to the table, but the real magic happens when the two play off each other.
GettyHal Jordan’s passive cynicism is perfectly contrasted by his rookies’ antsy loyalty. John Stuart is eager to prove himself and replace Jordan, but he doesn’t have the complete picture. Jordan, on the other hand, is desperately guarding his job, while attempting to let Stuart forge his own path. The series’ non-linear narrative is perfect for exploring this relationship in much greater detail.
The first three episodes do a beautiful job of introducing the characters and their larger motivations. This has quickly become one of the most popular shows in DCU’s history and could bridge the gap until “Clayface” and 2027s “Man of Tomorrow.” Now that the series has truly taken off, many fans have started regaining faith in the cinematic universe.
What’s Next for Gunn’s DCU?
Now that two of the DCU’s most prominent figures have taken center stage, many fans only have one question. They are desperate to learn what’s next for the franchise outside of the announced projects. While, DC likely can’t plan too far ahead as most of the projects are based on profit, fans can at least rest assured the cinematic universe is in good hands.
Ultimately, while current “Lanterns” reviews are exceedingly positive, only time will tell to see if the series manages to stick the landing. superhero media is extremely divisive, especially among fans. Thankfully, the show has already left a great impression and will most likely to do so for the remaining five episodes.
