Chef Alex Guarnaschelli Shares Stance on Common Ingredient & Fans Are Already Taking Sides

When a celebrity chef drops a “fight me in the comments” moment, you already know it’s about to get spicy. And yep, you read that right; Alex Guarnaschelli just turned a humble kitchen shortcut into a full-blown debate.

In a video posted to Instagram on April 5, 2026, Guarnaschelli kicked things off with a bold take on jarred garlic (a.k.a. “jarlic”) and let’s just say…she did not hold back. Naturally fans, and a few fellow chefs, had plenty to say.

Wait…What’s Wrong With Jarlic?

Guarnaschelli’s caption set the tone immediately: “Let’s talk about jarlic!” followed by a question that basically dared the internet to respond: “Do you agree with me on this?🧄🤔”

In the video, she didn’t waste a second diving straight into the controversy:

“Jarlic! Fight me in the comments. Yes, Jarlic. I know this is gonna be a controversial opinion because this is a great shortcut.”

Yep, she’s acknowledging the convenience factor… but she’s not buying it. Her main beef is with the mystery timeline of jarred garlic:

“This stuff just scares me. It’s shelf-stable without being refrigerated. Who knows how long since this has actually been cut.”

Guarnaschelli is saying fresh garlic, grated properly, wins on flavor and safety. But for those who love jarlic, she still wants to guide them toward better alternatives:

“A couple of cloves of garlic and a microplane grater… gives you a finer paste than this Jarlic. And if you really love the texture… dried granulated garlic sprinkled into stuff, when it’s hydrated, in anything vinaigrettes, sauces, soups, stews… basically becomes like this.”

Pro Fresh Garlic Fans Speak Up

Of course, the internet had thoughts, and let’s just say the comment section got spicy fast. Some fans were fully backing Alex’s fresh-garlic crusade, cheering her on like she just delivered the Sermon on the Mount of Garlic.

One person chimed in with a cautionary tale: “I wish it was the same. I have tried to use the jar once for convenience… that smell though. It ain’t right.” And then there was the super extra “Louderrrrrrrrrrr,” because, yep, some people don’t do subtle.

One clever fan even dropped a full-on life hack, basically saying, you can have your fresh garlic and still cheat a little: “Buy peeled garlic from your local Asian market, mince it in the food processor, plastic baggie it, flatten it, and freeze it. Fresh garlic all the time without using gross jarlic. I’ve been doing it for years!” Honestly, you can’t argue with that level of dedication.

Naturally, the pros had to drop their two cents. Britt Rescigno kept it short and satisfying: “Preach! 👏” And then Kardea Brown joined in with extra emphasis: “Amen sis…. Amen!!!!”

So yeah, if you’re wondering who’s backing Alex, the chef squad has spoken. It seems like some things (like fresh garlic) are basically sacred territory.

Team ‘Jarlic’ Fans Stand Strong

But not everyone was here for Alex’s garlic gospel. Some fans threw their hands up in surrender and made it painfully relatable. One commenter jokingly quoted Reba McEntire, and confessed their life struggles while pleading for mercy:

“ALEX, as a single mom who works two jobs who loves her kids and never stops, please let me live with my jarlic!!! 🤣🤣I’m broke, I’m Italian, I’m trying! I love you!! 💗💗💗💗”

Another fan laid out their full-on household reality, measuring garlic by heart, not science:

“I love you, Alex, but you lose me on this. I cook all the time. I am the only one that cooks in my household. I work full time. I measure garlic with my heart. Soooo, jarlic it is…. And the Sam’s Club size to boot!!!”

Some simply don’t use garlic enough to make fresh worth it: “I rarely use garlic, so buying it fresh doesn’t make sense.” And a few were just rebellious: “I don’t care! I can’t stand chopping garlic and I love the jarred stuff! Defiance!”

Basically, the comment thread became a full-on debate of kitchen life: convenience vs. flavor, time vs. tradition, and fans unapologetically standing their ground. And you can almost hear Alex chuckling as she reads through those comments.

Everyone Seems to Be For Garlic

Let’s get real… at the end of the day, it seems like this is one of those debates where there’s no real winner; just a lot of garlic lovers doing what works for them. Alex Guarnaschelli made her point, fans defended their routines, and honestly? We’re here for all of the chaos.

Because whether you’re team fresh, team granulated, or proudly team jarlic… at least we can all agree on one thing: garlic makes everything better.

Fans can next catch Alex Guarnaschelli as a judge on “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing,” which is due to premiere later this month.
