The Finale Begins

The final three chefs arrive in the kitchen. The judges arrive, and they are dressed fancy for the finale. They have one final Culinary Commandment to be tested on: Innovation. For this challenge, they will have to innovate iconic dishes in the culinary world. To help pick the dishes, they are joined by legendary chefs Suzanne Goin, Daniela Soto-Innes, and Eric Ripert.

Each of the legendary chefs has brought with them one of their signature dishes. The chefs were randomly assigned one of the dishes:

  • Cara got Eric’s dish
  • Chris got Suzanne’s dish
  • Matt got Daniela’s dish

The chefs will get to sit down, taste the dish, and discuss it with the legend. They will then have two hours of cooking their reimagined dish. From there, the judges will score the dishes, and the chef with the lowest score will be eliminated! Yes, only two will move on to the final challenge tonight.

The Pressure Is On

The chefs meet with the legends to discuss these dishes. All three of them are intimidated by this challenge. The discussions are done, and now the chefs have two hours to complete their innovative dishes.

Chris is cooking beef cheeks, so he is using a pressure cooker to get them cooked in two hours. The judges are worried for him. However, he used the pressure cooker before and got a perfect score on that dish!

All three of the chefs have started cooking now. They are each bringing in their own roots to this dish as the innovation. Matt is cooking lamb, which is the first time he’s cooked lamb in this competition. The legends and judges go around to see how the chefs are working and what their plans are for these dishes.

They are worried about Chris maybe doing too much with his dish. He checks the beef, and it seems to have cooked to his liking.

Tasting & Results

The time has run out, and time for the chefs to serve these dishes. Chris is struggling with plating his and breaking all the eggs:

  • Cara – Suzanne said the ginger on the salmon is great. Eric said it’s a dish that he loves. Suzanne loved how she did the scallion two ways. Michael said she took a French dish and gave it a hard turn to the east. He wanted a baguette to finish the sauce because it’s so good. Padma said she gave an elegant dish.
  • Chris – He got it together, but will the judges like it? Suzanne said it seems like the pressure cooker worked. She loved the flavors he brought to it. Wylie said he did a great job with the pressure cooker. It’s visually like Suzanne’s dish, but totally his own. He wanted more seasoning with the rice.
  • Matt – Padma said it looks beautiful. Daniela said she loves the three sauces that he made. She wants him to write the recipe down for her, but not a fan of the tostada. Padma loved how bright and sweet the plantains made the dish. Wylie wanted the lamb to be cooked a little longer. Eric agreed. Daniela said based on innovation, he nailed it.

Results: The scores are in, and here are the results:

  • Cara – 113 points
  • Chris – 108 points
  • Matt – 103 points

That means Cara and Chris are moving on to the final challenge, and Matt has been eliminated! This one is a shocker!

The Final Challenge

Before getting to the final challenge, we see the judges share some words about the final two chefs.

The chefs are in the kitchen, and the judges arrive. Padma said there are no more commandments. They want them to cook the foods they love. For this final challenge, they will be cooking a three-course meal that shows off their Past, Present, and Future. Cooking is about storytelling, so is their story worth telling?

The chefs will have six hours to prep and cook. They have a sous chef to help them, whom Chris chose a friend of his, Gerald, and Cara chose Beverly from this season. They will serve the dishes to the same judges from the first challenge, as the legends will be back. The chefs then discuss their dishes and what they plan on making.

Tasting Time

After discussing their dishes, it’s time to get started on these dishes. We aren’t messing around tonight, as it’s time to taste these dishes:

  • Chris’ First Course (Past) – Suzanne said his dish is really beautiful. The dish came alive with the pistachio soup. Eric said the crab was cooked perfectly. Daniela said it’s so delicious. Padma said she liked how he layered the acid, but you didn’t need the rice cracker. The soup is so beautiful.
  • Cara’s First Course (Past) – Michael said they are all delicious. Suzanne said the sticky rice was the showstopper. Padma said she liked all three of her dim sum. The soup dumpling was a bit dry. Eric said the soup dumpling was dry, but he was very impressed.

The chefs are working on their second courses now. Cara said she’s taking a risk with this one. Chris is trying to get a bit of his mom on his dish. Time for tasting:

  • Chris’ Second Course (Present) – Wylie said this is beautiful. The potato is the sleeper on the plate, as it’s fantastic, and mom would be proud. Eric said he loved the chutney that he made. Daniela said she loved how fun this is. Suzanne wanted more crispy-skinned quail. Padma said his mother would be incredibly proud of him.
  • Cara’s Second Course (Present) – Padma said she admires her courage. The broth tasted beautiful, and the lobster was good. Wylie wasn’t sure why there was spice on the side, but Suzanne said she loved the chiles on the side. Eric said the lobster was cooked to perfection.

The Final Course on ‘America’s Culinary Cup’

The chefs are working on the final dish. Both of them think of their kids when thinking of their future, so these dishes are a nod to them. Time runs out, so time for the judges to taste them:

  • Chris’ Final Course (Future) – Eric said it’s a beautiful dish, and the meat is cooked well. Didn’t need so much oil. Suzanne said there was a lot of sweetness going on. Padma said he gave them a cohesive meal. This is a fabulous end to his whole meal, and she is proud of him.
  • Cara’s Final Course (Future) – Michael loved the dumplings with the ganache. Eric said very sophisticated and well-balanced. He didn’t want the tea to be as thin. Daniela said it’s beautiful and elegant. She said her journey and family are all present here. Padma said no one else could have made this dish, as it’s so personal to her story. She did a beautiful job.

The courses are done. It’s time for the judges to score these dishes. Padma said it’s so hard, and did not think it would be this close.

Results: There were 360 points up for grabs tonight. The results came down to just four points! The winner of “America’s Culinary Cup” is…coming up after the commercial!
