First Mystery Box Challenge
We have arrived at the second week of the competition, and the first Mystery Box Challenge of the season. The judges are in place, and the home cooks have arrived in the kitchen. We will provide updates as tonight’s episode airs, so keep refreshing this page for the latest results.
8:12 p.m. – For tonight’s Mystery Box Challenge, they have one hour to make an Eggs Benedict inspired by their roots. Aishu doesn’t have to cook this week because she won last week. She did get an advantage, which was picking one territory that would have to use a small whisk and not a big one for the challenge. She picked Europe, which is definitely struggling to get that hollaindaise sauce made with the whisk.
8:22 p.m. – These home cooks are struggling, as most haven’t made poached eggs or hollandaise sauce, or maybe one time. Foo has to restart his, as it’s curdling.
8:30 p.m. – Time runs out, and these home cooks struggled to get it plated. Eggs were breaking, sauce was missing. No one seems happy with what they plated.
Results – Best Dishes
8:42 p.m. – The judges went around and checked out all of the dishes. They will now taste the best dishes from each region:
- Shompa (Asia-Pacific) – Gordon said it looks good, and loves seeing the effort to make the bread from scratch. The hollandaise is delicious. The eggs are cooked beautifully. Tiffany said the bread is special. Joe said it’s balanced and delicate.
- Basia (Europe) – Tiffany said the eggs look great, and the consistency of the hollandaise sauce is inviting. Gordon said it’s a good dish and stop second-guessing yourself. Tiffany said the dish definitely works. Joe said it works because she’s honest to her roots.
- Heidi (Africa) – Gordon said it looks very good. What she’s done with the crawfish is amazing. Tiffany said it’s a very good dish. Joe said good use of seasoning…top notch.
- Maria (The Americas) – Joe said this is a great example of less is more. Gordon said it’s delicious. The balance is right. Tiffany said beautiful cooking. Joe enjoyed it very much.
Results – The judges discuss the dishes, and the winner of this Mystery Box Challenge is Heidi! She wins immunity for next week, plus all of Africa is safe from elimination tonight, which Rita is ecstatic about!
Results – Worst Dishes
8:50 p.m. – Now time for the bad news of the night, as the judges take a look at the worst dishes of the night by territory:
- Foo (Asia-Pacific) – Tiffany said the plate doesn’t look clean. Gordon said the beef tastes nice, and the tiny bit of hollandaise on the plate tastes good, but it’s just a bad concept. Too complicated. Tiffany said she doesn’t taste Vietnam in this dish. So many components that aren’t necessary. Joe said he doesn’t have mastery over the techniques they asked them to do, and that’s a problem.
- Nico (Europe) – Gordon said visually it looks a mess. Tiffany told him to add butter to the sauce, and he didn’t. Joe said he’s not fooling anyone in the room or the judges. Gordon said the saving grace is the eggs. Tonight, he was trying to be too clever. Tiffany said the actual hollandaise is tasty. Joe said he’s smarter and a better cook than this.
- Camilo (The Americas) – Gordon said it looks like the most unappetizing dishes ever. Tiffany said this is a mess, and a lot is wrong here. Gordon said the refried beans are good, but he wants him to poach an egg, and he’s a million miles away from the hollandaise.
Results – The judges discuss the bottom three dishes tonight. The home cook being sent home tonight on “MasterChef: Global Gauntlet” is Camilo.
