Melissa Gilbert Opened About About ‘Traumatizing’ Ordeal During ‘Good Morning America’ Interview

On Monday, April 6, Gilbert’s emotional interview on “Good Morning America” aired, in which she spoke out for the first time since her husband’s arrest.

She had a conversation with George Stephanopoulos, with a lawyer for Gilbert telling PEOPLE that they “decided it was time to sit down to clarify the facts of the case, which seem to have become lost to distraction, selective information, and clickbait.”

When asked about how this entire situation has been for her, Gilbert didn’t hold back, calling it the “most traumatizing experience of our lives.”

“Our life as we knew it is done,” she said. “We are grieving what we had — all of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects. For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled. Even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy. [He’s] the last person in the world who would hurt a child. And believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield hurt a child, he’d have a lot more to worry about than prison.”

Gilbert has stood by her husband’s side through it all, penning a letter of support for Busfield to the judge, where she referred to him as “my love, my rock, my partner in business and life.”

“He is my comfort and my council. His joy, humor and quick wit bring sparkle to my life. Tim is, quite simply, the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family,” she wrote according to PEOPLE.

“I can tell you, and anyone, that I know Tim better and more intimately than anything in his life ever has. Conversely, he knows me in the same way,” Gilbert continued. “Tim has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known. He has dedicated his spiritual self to always being of service to others. He starts every day with kindness and compassion.”

Gilbert 30 year old son, Michael, also wrote a letter in support, calling Busfield “my hero.”

“Ever since we met, he has shown up for me as a father more in the 15 years l’ve known him than my own biological father ever has in the entirety of my life,” he wrote. “He is kind, thoughtful, and carries himself with a stalwart integrity all of us could only ever hope to match.”
