Nick Castle is celebrated by horror fans as an icon for his work on the “Halloween” films, in which he played Michael Myers (also known as The Shape) in John Carpenter’s 1978 film, “Halloween.” Castle is also a writer and director, with projects including “Escape from New York,” “The Boy Who Could Fly,” and “The Last Starfighter.”
Nick Castle Seen During Rare Public Outing
Despite his success, Castle is not regularly photographed in public. On Sunday, August 30, the Daily Mail published photos of Castle in what they described as a “rare outing in Los Angeles.” The actor and filmmaker wore a green baseball cap and sunglasses, which disguised his appearance. He also opted for a casual look, wearing an orange T-shirt and yellow cargo pants.
Castle’s role in “Halloween” has made him an icon in the genre, but he had never intended for this to happen. He did not even audition for the part. In a 2025 interview with Script magazine, he reflected on how Carpenter cast him.
“They were shooting it near my house in Hollywood, and I just decided to go over there and see if I could just snoop around and learn, you know, by being around the set. You know, to dispel any fears I might have for when I was going to eventually direct,” he said. “When I told John [Carpenter] that, he said, ‘Hang around then and be this guy and that way you’re here, and I have someone that I know will do what I tell them to do.’”

GettyIn a 2019 interview with Wicked Horror, Castle discussed his role in “Halloween” and his return to the franchise. He said, “Well, that’s the thing. It was just a lot of fun. When you do all that other stuff, it’s a lot of work. Doing this was a lark. It was fun to reconnect with this world because I’m retired now for a number of years, so I haven’t had the experience being on set for a long time. That was fun.”
He continued, “Never been to South Carolina, where they were shooting it. Really talented crew, and cast, and having the chance to reconnect with Jamie. I see her from time to time at horror conventions and things like that. John, of course, he’s still a close friend and he came out during the time I was there. It was like a vacation. It was like a fun vacation and then you put this rubber mask on. It’s fun.”
“Halloween” is considered a cult classic and is one of the most beloved slasher films. But Castle revealed in his interview that he had no way of knowing it would be a hit while working on it. “Truly no idea,” he confessed. “And you can look at the dailies and say ‘hey, that worked. It’s in focus,’ things like that, but everyone knows when you’re jumping out of a room or out of the darkness, it’s not scary. Until you put that music in and have an audience and hear them scream, you don’t know if it’s actually working.”
