Sarandon’s tribute captured the private warmth behind one of Hollywood’s most daring performers.
After a major stroke in 2012 left him using a wheelchair, Curry continued appearing at conventions and special events for the fans who had embraced his work. Curry’s longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, confirmed to The Associated Press that the British actor died Tuesday night, August 25, at his Los Angeles home. No cause was disclosed.
How Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry Were Connected
Sarandon and Curry became forever linked through the 1975 musical comedy horror film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Sarandon played Janet Weiss, a sheltered young woman traveling with her fiancé, Brad Majors, played by Barry Bostwick. After their car breaks down, the couple seeks help at a castle ruled by Curry’s flamboyant scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
They weren’t a couple, but their performances put both actors at the center of the same boundary-pushing screen phenomenon. Curry originated Frank-N-Furter in the 1973 London stage production “The Rocky Horror Show” before bringing the role to film.
The ‘Rocky Horror’ Costars Shared a Lasting History
The film initially struggled to find an audience, but late-night screenings transformed it into an enduring cultural event. Its costumes, audience callouts and “Time Warp” dance became traditions passed from one generation of moviegoers to the next.
Sarandon and Curry reunited with several castmates for Entertainment Weekly’s 40th anniversary celebration in 2015. In 2025, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” marked its 50th anniversary. The American Film Institute has described it as the longest-running movie of all time, with limited-release midnight screenings continuing worldwide.
Tim Curry’s Career Reached Far Beyond ‘Rocky Horror’
Although Frank-N-Furter became his signature character, Curry built a career around his ability to disappear into wildly different roles.
He played Wadsworth in “Clue,” Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries “It” and the hotel concierge in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” His credits also included “Annie,” “Legend” and “Muppet Treasure Island,” along with extensive voice work.
Curry earned three Tony Award nominations for “Amadeus,” “My Favorite Year” and “Spamalot.” He also released his memoir, “Vagabond,” in 2025.
Sarandon’s goodbye brought the focus back to the man behind those larger-than-life performances. Her message was intimate and grateful. Curry had a generous heart, and he meant a great deal to a great many people.
