Much-loved Canadian-American actor Ryan Reynolds has vulnerably admitted that working with Sir Kenneth Branagh left him feeling “totally intimidated.”
Reynolds, 49, is starring alongside the 65-year-old Academy Award-winning (and eight-time Academy Award-nominated) British actor and filmmaker in Apple TV’s new action comedy movie “Mayday,” which hits the popular streaming platform today.
The star of DC offering “Green Lantern” and Marvel’s “Deadpool” trilogy would be the first to admit that “Thor” director and “Harry Potter” star Branagh, who won his Oscar for directing 2021’s coming-of-age movie “Belfast,” is considered to be a more highbrow performer than he is.
That undoubtedly contributed to Reynolds feeling intimated, which he explained in a recent interview with People about the two unlikely co-stars’ new movie.

While a key takeaway was Reynolds’ deep respect for Branagh, which left him feeling anxious about working with the acclaimed Brit, he needn’t have worried, as the admiration was a two-way thing.
Branagh told the outlet, “I guess we might have Marvel’d up, but we didn’t,” referring to the fact both men had been involved with Marvel superhero projects in the past.
He then added, “I can say with complete sincerity, as a big fan [of Reynolds], particularly when this script came to me, I thought, ‘Oh, this is all about chemistry.'”
Then, after specifying Reynolds’ work with Samuel L. Jackson in “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” movies as something he had watched and admired, he added, “So I’m being asked to do this in the guesstimation that we might have some sort of rapport. I think that Ryan Reynolds’ generosity is screaming out there. I’m betting on this guy, and I was right.”
Reynolds Returned the Compliments in Kind
GettyReynolds then said, “I also think there’s two things. One is that when we met, it was as though we knew each other for 20 years. We’d known each other forever. It felt like that. I mean, right away, just in lockstep. There was no overexcitement or anything.”
The Canadian-American star then spoke about feeling intimidated working with Branagh, explaining, “I was totally intimidated to work with him because he’s a freaking genius, obviously, but at the same time, I’ve done this enough to know that when you’re playing tennis with a superior tennis player, somebody who’s truly gifted, you get better, and I just loved that.”
Wrexham Football Club owner Reynolds continued praising Branagh, complimenting his action hero chops, adding, “I get a front row seat to Ken Branagh. That’s a pinch-me kind of moment anyway. But I sat there thinking like, ‘My God, this man is doing a Russian accent. He’s doing kung fu with a pool table triangle. He’s kicking a** left, right and center, must just go home black and bloody blue every single night.'”
He concluded, “Never once does he complain about one thing. Not even one thing, like ever. Juggling that many things at once on a set and making it all look easy, but he doesn’t make you pay for the work. He doesn’t show you all that effort that goes in to make this possible. He makes it look effortless.”
What Is ‘Mayday’ About?
Per IMDb, the plot of “Mayday” is as follows: “Lieutenant Troy Brennan’s reconnaissance mission over Soviet territory goes awry, forcing him to crash-land and survive in Russian wilderness while evading capture or rescue.”
Ryan Reynolds plays the downed pilot, while Sir Kenneth Branagh plays Nikolai Ustinov, an ex-KGB carpenter who agrees to help him escape enemy territory.
The movie was directed, written, and co-produced by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. In addition to Reynolds and Branagh, it also stars Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, and David Morse. Lovell Adams-Gray, Clark Johnson, Alex Mallari Jr., Louis Cancelmi, and Alex Ozerov appear in supporting roles.
Early reviews for “Mayday” are fantastic, with Reynolds and Branagh both receiving praise for their performances. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive approval rating of 83%.
