A$AP Rocky Reveals the ‘Embarrassing’ Moment He First Met Rihanna

A$AP Rocky is opening up about how his story with Rihanna really began, and it was far from glamorous.

During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” the rapper reflected on the first time he ever met Rihanna, long before their relationship, family and shared life together. Rocky told Fallon the moment happened outside a New York City nightclub at a time when he was not yet famous and was struggling to get past the bouncers, while Rihanna was already one of the biggest stars in the world.

“I wasn’t famous at the time. She was obviously Rihanna. And I couldn’t get in,” Rocky recalled, explaining that he was with friends Virgil Abloh and Matthew Williams when things got tense at the door. According to Rocky, Rihanna stepped outside during the exchange and the two locked eyes, a moment he said left him stunned and slightly embarrassed as she caught him arguing with security. He added with a laugh that she did not help him get into the club..

The rapper also briefly shared how life looks now, saying it feels “amazing” to welcome his third child with Rihanna and that becoming a father again has made him feel like “a new man.”

While the first meeting may not have gone smoothly, the story has clearly come full circle. Rocky and Rihanna began dating in 2020 and are now parents to three children: sons RZA and Riot Rose, and daughter Rocki, born in September.

Rocky recently revealed in a separate interview that his mother, Renee, believed the two were meant to be together long before they actually became a couple. In a clip from The New York Times’ “Popcast,” Rocky said his mom repeatedly encouraged him to leave a former relationship because she wanted him with Rihanna. At the time, he brushed it off, insisting they were just friends. Looking back, he admitted, “Mothers know best,” per Billboard.

Rocky also shared that being with Rihanna brought clarity to his life and helped him reassess the people around him. He said the relationship helped him recognize which connections were genuine and which were not, adding that Rihanna was honest with him about who truly had his best interests at heart.

New music, public outings and full-circle moments

The interviews arrive as Rocky celebrates the release of his fourth studio album, “Don’t Be Dumb,” which dropped Jan. 16. The project marks his first album in years and includes tracks like “Helicopter” and “Punk Rocky.” Rihanna publicly showed her support for the album in December, commenting on the cover art reveal with an enthusiastic message cheering him on, per People.

Rocky was in New York promoting the album when he appeared on Fallon, and shortly after, he and Rihanna were spotted holding hands as they left their hotel and headed to the airport. The couple stepped out in bold looks and stayed close, offering a visual reminder of how far they have come since that awkward first encounter outside a club, per the Daily Mail.

Years later, what started as an embarrassing moment has turned into a shared life, a growing family and a story Rocky now tells with humor and gratitude.
