Grammy-winning Bluegrass musician Billy Strings performed at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, and he broke his leg while backstage.

Billy Strings Breaks Leg at Concert

Fans were confused when Strings did not return to the stage for an encore on Saturday, April 18, Live For Live Music reports. The reason is that Strings broke his leg while skateboarding backstage.

The publication shared an eyewitness account of the incident, reportedly posted on social media. “I was in section 102, he was going to do an encore, tried to do a kick flip on his skateboard and it shot out from underneath him and he landed right on his head,” an eyewitness shared, Live For Live Music reports. “He didn’t move on the ground for like 30 seconds and was clearly unresponsive. They moved him over with a barrier blocking our view and then brought a wheelchair in a stretcher [sic].”

As concern among fans grew, Strings later shared an update with fans on Instagram on Sunday, April 19. He posted a photo of an X-ray of what appears to be a fractured tibia. He also posted his set list for the event. Songs include “Ice Bridges,” Gone A Long Time,” and “Love Like Me.” Strings captioned the post with the place and date, writing, “4.18.26 | Charlottesville, VA,” and completed his message with a leg emoji.
