Ryan Gosling’s fourth time hosting “Saturday Night Live” on March 7 was interrupted by a surprise cameo from another A-List celebrity – Harry Styles, who will perform as the show’s host and musical guest next week.
During Gosling’s opening monologue, the star spotted Styles in the front row wearing a t-shirt adorned with a smiley face and the words ‘I Hate You.’. “Is that Harry Styles? What are you doing here, man?” he asked. Styles replied, “Well, I’m hosting next week, and it’s been a while, so I just wanted to watch, get a feel for it.”
Project Hail Harry?
Gosling, 45, continued his monologue, discussing his upcoming film “Project Hail Mary.” Variety reports he stated, “People are saying it’s like ‘E.T’ meets ‘Interstellar’, which is crazy, because those are like, what, two of the best films of all time? So they’re kind of like saying it’s like, what, double that?”
While Gosling continued his monologue, the camera kept cutting back to Styles, 32, as Gosling demanded to know the reason why. The ‘Aperture’ singer replied, “I don’t know, I’m just listening,” to which Gosling replied “Well, could you listen less cool? Your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue.”
After Gosling insisted that a split screen of the two be removed, the crew complied by giving the screen entirely to Styles, to which Gosling cried out, “Not like that! What’s going on with camera two?” The camera then showed a cameraman sporting a t-shirt stating “I [heart] Harry.”
Gosling then began to sing Styles’ 2017 debut solo single “Sign of the Times,” which features in “Project Hail Mary,” before segueing into the Oscar-winning song “I’m Just Ken,” from his 2023 film ”Barbie.” He was joined onstage by regular SNL cast members dressed in futuristic space-themed outfits, however after asking “You guys all came to help me? Because I’m like your favorite host of all time?” he was quickly rebuffed by long-time cast member Kenan Thompson, who retorted, “We just came to get a better look at Harry.”
Although his monologue was nearly derailed by the surprise cameo from Styles, Gosling returned to his usual fine hosting form. His sketches included a memorable moment of breaking character with new cast member Ashley Padilla, after their lines were unexpectedly rewritten following the show’s dress rehearsal. This week’s show also featured the band Gorillaz as the musical guest.
Styles to Pull Double Hosting Duty for Second Time
GettyNext week marks Styles’ second time serving as both host and musical guest, following his SNL hosting debut in 2019. This will be his seventh appearance on the show, first starring in a cameo role with One Direction in 2012.
Styles will be performing two songs from “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” which was released on March 6, 2026. His SNL hosting duties follow the recent release of his Netflix special “Harry Styles: One Night in Manchester,” which featured a showcase performance of his latest album.
