Spotify Announces Long-Awaited Feature

Spotify is the most popular music streaming service available. This is the case for several reasons, including its intuitive interface and the fact that it’s been around for so long. Now, Spotify users have another reason to be excited, as the company has finally announced the addition of lossless audio. This is a feature that the company has teased for quite some time.

Lossless auto is another form of high-definition sound. The selling point of the feature is that it preserves the original sound with no loss of quality.

Spotify Isn’t the First Music Streaming Platform to Have Lossless Audio

Spotify announced that it would be adding lossless audio on September 10. Gustav Gyllenhammar, the company’s VP of Subscriptions, said in a statement, “The wait is finally over; we’re so excited [that] lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers.”

He then said, “We’ve taken time to build this feature in a way that prioritizes quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step, so you always know what’s happening under the hood. With Lossless, our premium users will now have an even better listening experience.”

Per the press release, lossless audio has begun rolling out to premium Spotify subscribers in select markets. Users will receive a notification in the app once the feature is available to them. It’s currently unclear which markets will receive it first and how quickly Spotify will roll it out to more people.

The company is gradually sending the feature to more than 50 markets from September 10 until October. Currently, users in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK are already gaining access.

The press release states that Spotify lossless audio will be available on mobile devices, tablets, desktops, and various other devices that support the platform. Once the feature is available, users will be able to select from the following sound qualities:  Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless. Users will need to enable lossless on each device they wish to use it on.

Notably, Apple Music has had lossless audio since 2021.

The Company Continues to Add New Features

While Spotify has been lagging behind Apple Music in introducing lossless, the company has added several new features over the last few years. One of the most notable is the addition of AI playlists. According to the company, this feature began beta testing in September 2024 in the US, Canada, Ireland, and other regions worldwide.

Of course, Spotify isn’t only a popular choice for music. It’s also a home for audiobooks and podcasts. The platform currently has more than 696 million active users.
