A British rock band that first burst on the scene in the late 1970s have been forced to cancel a show in Virginia after a tragic accident involving the group’s tour bus.
People reports that Squeeze has canceled a show that had been scheduled to take place at Virginia’s Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
A Tragic Accident
According to People, U.S. Park Police (USPP) confirmed in a statement on Saturday, September 5, that officers were called to Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts — a venue located on national park property in Fairfax County, Va. — around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday, September 3.
“Officials said a roadside bus service employee, whose identity has not been made public, was working underneath a tour vehicle when a support apparatus failed and the bus collapsed on top of him,” People reported, noting the the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Sad Decision
Due to the tragic circumstances, the band decided it wouldn’t be appropriate to perform that evening.
“There was an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park today, tragically resulting in a loss of life. Out of respect, tonight’s show has been canceled,” the venue announced via wrote.
On Thursday, September 3, the band issued a statement via Facebook to explain the circumstances.
“Squeeze are deeply saddened and shocked by an incident that occurred at the venue earlier today, which resulted in the loss of a life,” the statement read.
“After discussions with the venue and the relevant authorities, the decision was made to cancel this evening’s performance. We will work with the promoter and venue regarding the possibility of rescheduling the show and will communicate further information to ticket holders as soon as it is available,” the statement added.
“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event,” the band concluded.
A follow-up Facebook message notified fans that a subsequent show on Friday, September 4, would go ahead as planned.
“This has been an extremely difficult and upsetting time for everyone involved, and our thoughts remain firmly with the family of the individual, and all those affected by this terrible loss,” the band stated.
A String of Hits
Formed in 1974, Squeeze’s self-titled debut album was released in 1978, yielding the hit “Take Me I’m Yours.”
The band’s sophomore effort, 1979’s “Cool For Cats,” built on that success with the title track and “Goodbye Girl” also leaving a mark on the charts.
Other hit singles from the late 1970s through to the late ’80s include “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell),” “Another Nail in My Heart,” “Tempted,” “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Hourglass” and others.
Squeeze released its 16th studio album in March 2026, “Trixies,” and is currently on tour throughout the U.S. in support of that new LP.
The American leg of the tour will wrap up in Detroit on September 27.
After a brief break, the tour is scheduled to resume in the U.K. in November and December, and will continue in Australia and New Zealand in spring 2027.
