Rapper Young Thug and singer Mariah the Scientist are officially engaged, turning a hometown concert into an unforgettable milestone.
The rapper, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams II, proposed to the R&B singer during his Hometown Hero benefit concert in Atlanta on Dec. 16. As the crowd watched, the words “Will You Marry Me?” lit up the screen behind him while he dropped to one knee. Mariah, visibly emotional, accepted the proposal as fans erupted in cheers. When Young Thug asked, “What you say?” she replied simply, “I guess I’m getting married,” per E! News.
Videos from the moment quickly spread across social media, showing Mariah admiring her engagement ring, a large diamond set on multiple bands surrounded by smaller stones. The proposal marked a celebratory full-circle moment for the Atlanta natives, who have been together since 2021 and weathered both public scrutiny and personal challenges along the way.
Who Mariah the Scientist Is and How Their Love Story Began
Mariah the Scientist, born Mariah Amani Buckles, is an Atlanta-raised singer known for her emotionally raw songwriting and introspective lyrics. Before pursuing music full time, she studied biology at St. John’s University in New York, where she received a scholarship and initially planned to become a pediatric anesthesiologist. She later left school during her third year to chase music, a decision that led to a record deal within a year, per People.
Her stage name reflects her academic roots, and she has spoken about blending science and emotion in her songwriting. Since launching her career, Mariah has released multiple albums and an EP, collaborated with artists like 21 Savage and Vory, and performed at major festivals including Rolling Loud and Summerfest.

Mariah first connected with Young Thug in March 2021 after reaching out online. What began as a professional interaction soon became romantic, and the pair officially began dating later that year. She has shared that she intentionally took her time entering the relationship, wanting to be mindful after Young Thug came out of a long-term relationship.
Marriage First, Then Everything Else
The couple’s engagement comes after a brief breakup earlier this year. In October, Young Thug publicly acknowledged their split before confirming days later that they had reconciled while celebrating Mariah’s birthday. Just weeks after reuniting, the rapper popped the question.
Days before the proposal, Mariah spoke candidly about her views on love and commitment during a Dec. 13 interview with Angie Martinez on Power 105.1. She shared that marriage has long been her priority.
“I want to be married,” she said, explaining that while she does want children someday, she wants marriage to come first. “I just want a commitment that doesn’t involve an obligation to a baby. I just want it to be out of love and not out of responsibility.”
