The ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 6 Limbo Could Come to an End Soon

TV show renewals are never a guarantee. They never have been, but it feels like more and more shows are canceled abruptly than ever before, especially when it comes to streaming. However, “Sweet Magnolias” fans have never had to wait as long for renewal news as they have in 2026.

When Season 5 dropped in June 2026, all eyes were on Netflix confirming a renewal within days. That’s the way it worked in previous seasons, but that’s not been the case this time. Netflix has sat back and waited to see how the fifth season performs, and that wait could come to an end soon.

“Sweet Magnolias” star Logan Allen took to Instagram Live to chat with his followers and share the updates that he knows. When one fan asked if he was coming back for a sixth season, he admitted that Netflix hasn’t made a decision yet. A writers’ room hasn’t even opened yet, which is a worrying sign for many fans. Many shows will still open a writers’ room for ideas to share with the streamer to push for a renewal.

Allen did offer a sense of hope. He shared that his “guess” is that the news will come by the end of August. He didn’t share why he suspects that, but it could be for one of two reasons. Cast options may be coming up, or it could just be that it will mark just over the two-month mark since the fifth season premiered, and that’s usually when streamers make their final decisions.

That being said, he encouraged fans of the show to keep pushing for Netflix to renew it, making it clear that he is more than interested in returning.

Creator Sheryl J. Anderson Is Hoping for More

Allen isn’t the only one looking forward to returning. Show creator Sheryl J. Anderson had made it clear that she didn’t intend for “Sweet Magnolias” Season 5 to be the end. There were some cliffhangers in the season finale, offering a way to return to Serenity, South Carolina, for another season filled with drama and excitement.

However, it could mean a bittersweet renewal is coming. The costs to produce a streaming show go up exponentially after the second season, which is why so few shows get third- and fourth-season renewals. That means the viewership has to be strong to warrant renewals, and eventually, abrupt cancellations can happen.

“Sweet Magnolias” did make it into the Top 10 when it dropped on the giant, but that may only be enough to warrant a final season renewal. While bittersweet, it’s better than leaving a show in limbo or with unresolved cliffhangers. Many shows have already been handed final-season orders, including “The Night Agent” and “The Lincoln Lawyer,” so “Sweet Magnolias” could be next.

A saving grace is that “Virgin River” has recently been renewed for its eighth season, which is currently in production in Vancouver, Canada. It shows that Netflix is happy to keep a popular series going. Everyone is ready for news now, especially with Allen’s hint at when that could arrive.
