Actor, comedian, writer, and producer Will Ferrell will star in a new Netflix comedy series focusing on the world of golf. Ferrell also created the series and will serve as executive producer.
The show is called “The Hawk.” Per IMDb, it “Follows Lonnie Hawkins, 2004’s top golfer, as he struggles to recapture his magic late in his career, refusing to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from golf’s greatest comeback.”
When the series was announced in April 2023, Deadline reported that “the series revolves around a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA.” The publication added that the story “would inevitably draw parallels to the controversial LIV Golf startup.”
LIV Golf is a professional men’s golf tour, established in 2022, designed to rival the PGA. “The Hawk” certainly sounds like it’s drawing influence from that scenario.
‘The Hawk’ Trailer Hit YouTube on May 13
The trailer for “The Hawk” hit YouTube on Wednesday, May 13.
It lasts for 103 seconds and introduces audiences to Will Ferrell’s golf professional Lonnie Hawkins.
The caption underneath the trailer reads, “Lonnie Hawkins, (Will Ferrell) 2004’s number one golfer, struggles on the back nine of his career to recapture his magic. His body says retire, but his heart says he’s not done yet. His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf’s new golden boy, know he’s through. But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history.”
In the trailer, viewers get a taste of the golfing action in the series, as well as a feel for Ferrell’s Hawkins. He appears to be a larger-than-life character who is stubborn, delusional about his own abilities, with a swaggering confidence that’s bordering on arrogance. On the golf course, he seems to have Happy Gilmore-esque anger issues when things aren’t going his way.
Suffice it to say, “The Hawk” looks like it’s going to be a real hoot.
Ferrell will star in the series alongside the likes of Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver and David Hornsby, Gabriel Hogan, and Aida Osman.
