“Real Housewives of Orange County” star Tamra Judge broke down in tears during the season 19 reunion while sharing the heartwarming news of a recent encounter with her estranged daughter, Sidney Barney. The 58-year-old reality star became visibly emotional as she recounted the moment that could signal healing in their long-strained relationship.
Judge’s revelation came during part one of the “RHOC” reunion, where she opened up about an unexpected visit from her 26-year-old daughter. The touching encounter took place at Judge’s home when Sidney stopped by to meet her sister, Sophia, for lunch plans.
The mother-daughter pair, who have been estranged for years following Judge’s contentious divorce from Sidney’s father, Simon Barney, in 2011, spent quality time reconnecting outside the family home. Their conversation lasted approximately thirty minutes and gave both women a chance to catch up on life developments.
Judge shares three children with her ex-husband, Simon —Sidney, Spencer, and Sophia—and also has an adult son, Ryan, from a previous relationship. The family dynamics became complicated after the divorce, when custody arrangements led to Sidney choosing to live with her father full-time.
The emotional reunion is a significant step forward in what has been a challenging journey for both mother and daughter, with previous reconciliation attempts having been set back by privacy concerns and public attention.
A Heartfelt Goodbye That Says Everything
The most touching moment of their reunion came when it was time for Sidney to leave. “She came to the house, and she was going to lunch with Sophia, and I went outside and we hugged,” Judge shared with host Andy Cohen. “We talked about life for about 30 minutes, and she’s very sweet.”
Judge struggled to maintain her composure as she described what happened next. “Then she said, ‘Mom, can I hug you goodbye?’ And she hugged me, and I just held onto her for so long, and I just said, ‘I can’t let you go. I just can’t let you go,'” she revealed during the emotional reunion segment.
The tender exchange clearly left a lasting impression on Judge, who described it as “just a really, really special moment.” She expressed optimism about their future relationship, telling Cohen that Sidney is “coming around,” suggesting continued progress in their reconciliation efforts.
Judge became increasingly emotional while sharing the reunion story, eventually breaking into tears as she recalled the meaningful embrace with her daughter.
Working Through Years of Estrangement
Judge has been transparent about her struggles with Sidney’s estrangement, even addressing the topic in therapy sessions featured on “RHOC” Season 19. During her premiere episode therapy session, she discussed how difficult it has been to cope with their separation over the years.
The relationship challenges began during Judge and Simon’s contentious divorce proceedings, which included a custody battle that ultimately affected the entire family dynamic. According to Judge during the “RHOC” Season 11 reunion in 2016, Sidney chose to support her father during the divorce, telling her, “I don’t want to live with you anymore. You’ve ruined my dad’s life.”
Previous reconciliation attempts have faced obstacles, including a 2017 reunion at Sidney’s high school graduation that was later criticized by Sidney for being made public. She expressed concerns about maintaining privacy and avoiding media attention in a Facebook post following that event.
However, family challenges like Simon’s stage 3 throat cancer diagnosis in 2020 helped bring everyone closer together and changed perspectives on family relationships. Judge told PEOPLE at the time that “all we have to do is rally together to make it through this.”
