Fans of “RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under” are mourning the loss of Australian performer and former contestant Maxi Shield. Shield, who was 51, appeared on the first season of “Drag Race Down Under,” which premiered in 2021. Their death came five months after revealing a difficult battle with cancer.
Fellow drag queen Wigs By Vanity confirmed the news of Shield’s passing on Instagram. Saying, “It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our dearest sister, Maxine, has passed away. We are all mourning the loss of an incredible icon, friend, and our beloved sister. Thank you for the laughs, the cackles, and the magic you brought into our lives.”
The statement continued, “I will cherish every second of our 30-year friendship, and I’m so grateful that I was a part of your chosen family. You will be forever loved and deeply missed. I love you, old girl.”
Tributes Are Pouring in For Maxi Shield
Following their appearance on “RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under,” Shield built a worldwide fanbase. Because of this, many fans and fellow “Drag Race” stars are taking to social media to pay tribute to Shied’s legacy.
One person said on Facebook, “Dear Maxine Maurine Shield, I woke to news you had passed over that BIG rainbow bridge. Sydney has forever lost a legend. Your wit. Your characters and your performance with Madonna in Sydney and at the Olympics will stick with me forever. Fly high, Queen. RIP.”
Someone else said, “I’m devastated to hear about the passing of my dear friend @maxishield. I knew Maxi for over 26 years when we first worked together at drag bingo in Sydney at the Banana bar for The Trust, when she would fill in for Claire, and I was the ball boy! It was then another 16 years later that I recruited her to come on the whirlwind, that was the Rebel Heart tour by Madonna.”
The tribute continued, “Maxi worked her butt off hosting each VIP party up and down the east coast of Australia, to hundreds of fans each night. Her efforts did not go unnoticed, and on the last night of the tour, she was invited up on stage with her ultimate idol @madonna.”
They then said of Shield, “This memory will last forever on the official tour film and YouTube, with the most iconic banter between these two legends. One, the Queen of Pop, and the other, the Queen of Hearts of Sydney drag. Rest in Peace my friend, you will never be forgotten.”
Someone else said, “RIP Maxi Shield, beloved drag performer and contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 1. Will forever remain in our hearts.”
They Will Be Missed
According to The Mirror UK, Shield first spoke publicly about their health issues in August 2025 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The star stated that they’d suffered a “very scary” health issue and that they had gone to the hospital after experiencing an “issue with a swollen gland.”
Shield later revealed, “this little swollen thing on the side of my throat is cancer,” and that there was a”70-80 per cent treatment rate.”
Career-wise, Shied was a fan favorite on “RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under” and placed sixth. Before that, the performer won Entertainer of the Year at the Drag Industry Variety Awards in 2015. Another career highlight came when Madonna selected Shield as the National Hostess for the Australian leg of her “Rebel Heart” tour.
Shield will be missed, but their legacy will live on.
