For 15 years, Chad Duell was the face of Michael Corinthos on “General Hospital.” However, after Duell stepped away from the soap in early 2025, it didn’t take long for another actor to make the role his own.
Rory Gibson debuted as Michael later that year, and despite some initial hesitation surrounding the recast, he has managed to win over plenty of longtime viewers.
Now, comments from Duell about how quickly “GH” replaced him have reignited the debate over who really embodies Michael Corinthos. Read on to see what “General Hospital” fans had to say.
Chad Duell Didn’t Expect ‘General Hospital’ to Recast Michael So Quickly
In a recent interview with Michael Fairman, Duell revealed that he didn’t expect someone to take his place as Michael so quickly after he stepped away from “General Hospital” in January 2025.
As longtime “GH” fans know, Duell portrayed Michael for nearly 15 years after first taking over the role in the spring of 2010. During that time, Michael grew from a troubled teenager into an adult with children, complicated romances and increasingly important roles within both the Corinthos and Quartermaine families.
Despite Duell’s lengthy run, Michael didn’t remain off-screen for long. Gibson took over the role later in 2025, beginning a new chapter for the legacy character.
Duell acknowledged that recasting is ultimately part of the business and also expressed openness to potentially joining another soap in the future. However, his surprise over how quickly “GH” moved forward with another Michael quickly circulated online and had fans debating the recast all over again.
Some viewers had little sympathy for Duell’s surprise.
“Sorry Chad. You quit. Weird thing is when I quit a job they replaced me too,” one fan wrote, arguing that Michael was too important of a legacy character for “GH” to leave without a clear return date.
However, even “General Hospital” fans who loved Duell’s portrayal acknowledged that replacing him didn’t necessarily mean erasing what he brought to Michael for 15 years. Instead, the bigger surprise for many viewers has been just how quickly Gibson managed to make the character feel like his own.
Fans Say Rory Gibson Has Made Michael Corinthos His Own
Replacing an actor who spent nearly 15 years playing the same character is no easy task, and plenty of viewers initially had reservations about seeing anyone other than Duell as Michael Corinthos.
For some, those reservations disappeared almost immediately.
“I was bummed when Chad left. To me, he WAS Michael,” one fan admitted. However, the viewer said their opinion changed when Gibson’s Michael burst through the doors at the Nurses Ball demanding his children.
“I knew he was the real deal!!!” the fan wrote, praising Gibson for adding more depth to the character.
Another viewer had a similar experience.
“I was not happy to hear they were recasting Michael, but Rory killed it from day one,” the fan wrote before joking, “I’m sorry, Chad, but we’re keeping Rory.”
Others went considerably further, with several longtime soap viewers calling Gibson one of the best recasts they had witnessed in decades of watching daytime television.
However, it isn’t simply Gibson’s ability to take over an established role that has impressed viewers. Some fans believe his performance has brought out different sides of Michael.
“Loved Chad as Michael, but am really liking Rory, even though it took a minute in the beginning,” one viewer shared. The fan specifically praised the darker quality Gibson brings to Michael, arguing that viewers can’t always tell what his version of the character is thinking.
Another fan thought Gibson brought “a badly needed energy” to the role and pointed out that the actor physically reminds them of a young Alan Quartermaine.
That observation is particularly interesting considering Michael’s complicated family history. Although he has spent most of his life as Michael Corinthos, his biological father was A.J. Quartermaine, making Alan his biological grandfather.
At the same time, other viewers see plenty of the Corinthos family in Gibson’s performance.
One fan praised Gibson for delivering what they described as a convincing “Corinthos stare” reminiscent of Sonny, despite Michael not being Sonny Corinthos’ biological son.
Those reactions highlight an interesting aspect of Michael that has existed for decades. Biologically, he is a Quartermaine, but he was largely raised by Sonny and has carried the Corinthos name for most of his life. Gibson’s portrayal appears to be reminding viewers of both sides of that identity, from his resemblance to the Quartermaines to the darker mannerisms fans associate with the man who raised him.
‘GH’ Fans Think Chad Duell Could Return as a Different Character
Embracing Rory Gibson as Michael doesn’t mean “General Hospital” fans have lost interest in Chad Duell.
In fact, several fans had another idea entirely: bring Duell back to Port Charles, just not as Michael Corinthos.
“Bring him back as a new character on GH. It wouldn’t be the first time,” one viewer suggested.
Another self-described Duell fan agreed that they would like to see the actor return to daytime but thought leaving Michael behind could actually give him an interesting opportunity.
“I’m a Chad Duell fan,” the viewer wrote, adding that they would love to see him take on a role other than Michael and “stretch and take on another persona.”
Other fans pointed out that soap operas have a long history of bringing familiar actors back as entirely different characters, meaning Duell returning to “GH” wouldn’t necessarily require Gibson to give up the role he has now made his own.
One viewer even had a specific Port Charles family in mind for Duell’s hypothetical return.
“Come back as another character,” the fan suggested. “You were great as Michael, but I’d like to see you as a Cassadine. Spice it up, be the bad guy.”
After 15 years, Duell understandably remains Michael Corinthos to a generation of “General Hospital” viewers. However, Gibson appears to have accomplished one of the most difficult tasks in daytime television: taking over a legacy character from a longtime performer and convincing viewers to embrace a new interpretation.
Judging by the fan reaction, plenty of viewers aren’t necessarily asking for Duell to reclaim Michael anymore. Instead, they’re curious to see what he could do if given the opportunity to become someone entirely new.
So, who is the real Michael Corinthos? After two actors have left such distinct impressions on the character, there may no longer be just one answer.
