‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ Sequel In the Works

Get ready for another blast from the past as Paramount begins work on a sequel to “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

Released in 2003, the film became a huge hit for stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, raking in nearly $180 million worldwide at the box office.

Kate Hudson Will Produce

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hudson is attached as a producer, alongside Stacy Sher.

Per THR, the sequel is still in the early development stage, and a writer is being sought for the screenplay.

At the moment, there are also no stars attached to the project, although the ideal plan would be for McConaughey and Hudson to reprise their roles from the original.

Instant Chemistry

While the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” sequel is still a long way from hitting theaters, if all the pieces come together, viewers will once again experience the sparkling chemistry between the film’s two leads.

In a 2024 interview with People, McConaughey recalled that their chemistry was both natural and instantaneous, and emerged the moment he met Hudson.

“Immediately, we were comfortable with each other, and we jacked with each other, and we busted each other’s chops, and we laughed a lot,” he recalled.

“There was a bit of rock and roll exchange, like, ‘Oh, this could be some heavyweight fun.’ And I think that’s why I was cast, and that’s why, for whatever extent, it worked,” he added.

The ‘Gift That Keeps on Giving’

While McConaughey has made it very clear he has no intention of returning to the fluffy rom-coms that put him on the map, he’d likely make an exception for “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

While appearing on the he Happy Sad Confused podcast, the “Dallas Buyers Club” Oscar winner revealed that particular movie continues to pay dividends — literally.

“’How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ‘is the gift that keeps on giving,” McConaughey said, revealing he still receives hefty residual checks from the film.

“I think it’s probably my favorite rom-com I’ve done,” he added, noting that he is not alone in making that assessment.

“And a lot of people love that rom-com. It still pays the best ‘mailbox money’ of any film I’ve ever done. By far,” he declared.

While he still earns big bucks from that film, there was a point when he’d earned quite a bit more.

“When [home video] used to be just DVDs or cable [instead of streaming or VOD], every March I’d get a big check because of Valentine’s Day,” he recalled.

Done with Rom-Coms?

During a conversation with Glenn Powell for Interview Magazine, McConaughey looked back on his multiple romantic comedies, and explained why he’s reluctant to head down that path again.

“I’ve usually zigged when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zag,” McConaughey said. “When I had my rom-com years, there was only so much bandwidth I could give to those and those were some solid hits for me. But I wanted to try some other stuff. Of course I wasn’t getting it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.”
